I wonder where the pup came from. If it was an 8 week old rescue, then maybe a puppymill bust. No reputable breeder would donate a puppy for an auction, no matter how rich or famous the bidders. They would have no control over who took the puppy home! We all know just bc celebs are rich, does not mean they take care of their animals, and does not mean a yorkie would be a good fit for their family. Look at Paris Hilton's many animals. Even on the Simple Life when they took their dogs into someone's house, and were asked are they trained? Paris and Nicole smirked at each other bc they knew they were not. Then the dogs pooped in the house.

I guess, what I'd also like to add about Sharon and the auction is that well ideally homes are visited in order to evaluate whether it is a suitable environment for the pup. However, Sharon's life is pretty out in the open isn't it? I think they have lots of dogs and Sharon is stepping back from working in The Talk so she'll get to spend plenty of time with the new pup Ozzy. I understand that auctioning a dog in theory can have very negative outcomes, but in this particular case it wasn't, so I think we should be happy for the little doggy :) I know I am :) And for the Osbourne family as well :animal-pa

I agree with you. But I just want to know where the dog came from. I don't buy that it was an 8wk old rescue. Think about the possible scenarios a 8wk old could be rescued from. The only thing I can think of is a puppymill bust. Now the puppymillers wouldn't have profitted from the bust, obviously, but I myself would not want to own a puppymill puppy. Just too much to gamble with. Now if it wasn't really a rescue, then it had to have been from a breeder. What type of breeder would donate a puppy? That's just my thinking out loud.

I agree with you, I think people use the word "rescue" very lightly. People who can afford to spend $10,000 for a dog often brag about how their dogs were "rescued". If it increases the status of rescued dogs, I'm all for it.

I never thought about it that way. Personally, I like Sharon Osbourne and I know that she donates a lot to charities involving animals, and allegedly the Osbournes have other dogs that are rescues (but like you've mentioned this might not be true). I guess it's my own bias (I like Sharon) that blinded me to the possibility that the story is not as true as it appears to be...I would be more skeptical if it would have been another celebritiy (like Paris Hilton for example).

Just a thought, Our local no kill shelter sometimes has puppies born there. It is their policy not to spay if the bitch is obviously pregnant. They spay after the puppies are born. The puppies are then adopted at 8 weeks old.

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against Sharon, I think it was very generous of her to do this, my concern is how they obtained the pup, and the fact that it was taken from his mother so early. We may be reading that Sharon has difficulty housebreaking her yorkie, or her yorkie has biting issues. I think the problem is puppies should not be a spur of the moment purchase, and a charity event is more about the charity, and you donate even though you don't really want the item. Sharon, I’m sure, will provide a much better home than many celebrities would.

Yeah, the main thing that bothers me is it feels like an impulse buy, sorta like buying a Christmas pup outside the local mall. People buy those because they're cute, not necessarily because they're in the market for a dog. Did Sharon go to the auction wanting to buy a puppy?

But, hey, they've got money and no doubt have people who can attend to the dog while they're off working or traveling. I hope the dog will have a good life.

See, when I read it I automatically assumed it was a high profile auction- one with a Select guest list; It would have then had an inventory list available so they knew what (and who) was available. I also assumed the pup was from a mill bust, but I'm sure the circumstances would have been discussed with anyone interested prior to bidding; a charity wouldn't want to lie to a high profile cleb about the origins of a rescue pup they are spending $10,000 on, the bad publicity they would get if that got out!? Not to mention the bad reputation the shelters etc involved would get- it surely wouldn't be worth the risk.
the osbornes do seem to be great animal lovers, so I would have doubted they would impulse-buy a puppy...
I have no idea the circumstances remember, I am Just assuming! but from the paragraph and a half that was allocated to the story, I figured they had probably just explained it as vaguely as possible to get in the cute picture! JMHO! :)

ok... at the risk of being piled on -- why aren't the PetSmart and in-front-of-Kroger pet adoptions targeted? Who are the people who stop at these events and adopt a dog? ...do they keep the dogs? ...or do they end up in another rescue/adoption? Don't get me wrong... I so admire the work of the foster/adoption/humane folks... but why is ok to let a dog go to whoever can sign the papers in front of PetSmart, but not to offer a dog for adoption with a starting bid of $5000?

From what I can determine the charity was not for dogs so I have to wonder who the brains behind auctioning off a little puppy was. Just because someone has the money to pay for a dog does not mean they have the brains to raise one properly. As I recall from Ozzy's television program they were not the most responsible pet owners. It just seems wrong to auction off a puppy to the highest bidder.

I'm not positive about this one, but I think the adoption event at Petsmart and petco are just to show what kind of dogs are available, and you fill out an application and still have to go through all the processes.

HollyRod is for people with parkinson's and autism, you are right not for dogs. While I find Sharon very entertaining, I remember her dogs were not the most well trained. There is a difference between being a dog lover, and being a responsible pet owner.
