good breeders?? I am starting to look at puppys and breeders. I am looking for ones online, and I am hoping they can be someone close to louisville kentucky if not do they ship them and how does that work? If you know of any that have websites can you please tell me the website, if you have gotten your yorkies from them, how much you paid for your yorkies, and why you like them please and thanks!(: |

i do love that puppy search; its always soo exciting! even though there isnt really much point in me talking breeders (what with the slight distance issue) but just incase you didnt realise something i just wanted to stress something to you... Generally, as a rule, you get what you pay for. i dont know what local prices are like there; but here it is £500-£600 for a show bred yorkie (although exhibitors are hard to find!), £250 for a puppy-mill pup delivered right to your door (usually in the back of a transit van), £400-450 for a well bred healthy, quality puppy or anywhere in between for a bybs 6wk old, non registered (or dog lovers club etc) poorly bred, (probably 'teacup') and non socailised puppy. someone may have had a good experience with a mill because they didnt know what they were looking for, or someone may have a grudge against a good breeder so not be truthful- i've seen it all! so what is most important is that you go to the facilities (ideally it will be in the home- probably with a puppy room where the pups are raised). and you will have to pay for quality- just make sure that it is Quality you are buying and not just qualities that have became fashionable (ie teacups, micros, hello kitty/ doll faced) oh and another point (sorry for going on soo much) if you have children, please don't take them with you when visiting the breeder for the 1st time; a lady around the corner from me was getting her daughter (13) a puppy, and they drove 2hrs to go and pick a pup. as soon as they walked into the barns ( ) the 'breeder' handed the girl a fragile, sick, flea, lice and tick infested, malnourished puppy who she very obviously fell straight in love with and could not set down. now that puppy is healthy, but even though She is, doesnt mean the rest of the litter was :(. keep us updated on your search, and maybe search the YTCA for local(ish) breeders? |
What a great thread...let's all do this right & those of you who really KnOw a good reputable breeder in their area list them...hope this goes positively! OP you came to the right place, please do preadoption research here prior to buying your breeder. |

Do not buy online. You can find someone that way but you must talk to them, go visit them etc. You can start with the YTCA website, there is a breeder tab on it, Yorkshire Terrier Club of America. If you can, contact a few of them somewhere close to you and if not in your area, ask them if they know someone who is. When you contact them if you email first, tell them what you are looking for, a bit about the home you can offer. We are a very conservative bunch don't use text messaging type of short abbreviations. Give a phone number or ask when you can phone them. Bear in mind at this time of year there are a lot of shows, people are busy with family, visiting relatives vacations, you may have contact a few times. Then there is me who loses emails and phone messages without remembering I was contacted. As we do not breed to fill a pet market, often a reputable breeder will not have something readily available. There should be genetic health contracts, they should be asking you many questions and be willing to answer yours. Most areas for a pet is about $1500 - $2,000 depending on where you are More than that is rather high for a pet. |

Rather than looking to buy online, I would recommend you find a local breeder. You want to be able to go see where the pups are being raised and see the parents in person. It's far too easy to be deceived online. You could start by attending any dog shows near you and talking to breeders there. If they don't have pups available, or if they have long waiting lists, then you can ask if they have anyone they recommend. You want a breeder that is going to take an interest in exactly who is getting their pup. This is going to be the start of a long term relationship and you what it to be a good one. Dogs are not shoes. Buying a pup should not be as easy as clicking the paypal button on a website. You will get recommendations here, along with PM's offering you pups. I dont know any of them personally, so I'm not commenting on them specifically. Just please keep in mind that any name that comes through YT needs to be looked at as thoroughly as you would any other. Unfortunately, too many people have learned that the hard way. |
Happy Tails Pet Resort You might talk with this lady. I know she shows and is very close to Louisville, just across the Ohio River bridge in Lanesville IN. |
The only reason I recommend her is for one she is my local breeder and I have also known her for a long time! She loves her baby's and has pages and pages of reference's ! My Bella is coming form her and she lets me come see her all the time! She wants her baby's to go to good homes! |

What a red flag looks like, 3 examples. 1.Champion lines but never seen a show ring themselves. 2.Advertises teddy bear, doll, teacup. 3.Undersized studs, ie 3.2 lbs, good grief. |
