LP Sugery costs in your area?? Hi, info from another thread made me wander about this topic. I have a almost 2 yr old yorkie male. We just found out about a month ago that he has early stages of LP in his rear left leg. Vet rated it at a 2 or less on the 1-4 scale. Told me it could clear up and he have no more probs. He's on joint supplements now. But, I freaked out when I read surgery costs on the internet thinkin one day should he need it what would I do?? I couldnt afford thousands. After more talks w the vet he said it wasnt near that bad and that the surgery was around 400. Im just wandering for those whove done surgery what were the costs and what region of the country was it. I live in a smaller town and wandered is it just cheaper in regional areas or did the vet quote me a price from years ago when his mom had her yorkies legs done. Just curious as to why the extreme price quotes. |
I live in Iceland, here the surgery on 1 foot costs about 900 dollars ! Fido has 3 grades on one foot the other one is 0, he has to go to a surgery this winter propably :( poor thing. |
$850.00 on Long Island. |
are these prices for every thing, the whole surgery process? you look on the internet and it will say 2-3 thousand on some sites. Im just confused. If it really is 400 in our area, thats not that big a deal. I could save and hopefully work that out. Im just curious as to where these 2-3 thousand dollar prices on the net comes from. That would scare any puppy parent to death. Swingin a few hundred bucks or even a thousand, but the multie thousands scare me... |
Orthopedic Vet- which was My preference.... someone with a good rep and experience. Surgery (both knees) & weeks of physical therapy approx 2300.00 |
We had LP surgery for both of our pups not quite 2 years ago in the San Diego, CA area. Our girl had to have both knees and our boy had one. We went to a highly rated orthopedic surgeon. It cost us about $4,000 for her two knees and about $3,000 for his one knee. This included the surgery, pre-op consultations/testing, and all post-op follow-up visits. It also included a three night hospital stay for her and one night for him. We found other places that would have been slightly less expensive. |

My Pixie had LP surgery last summer and it was done at by a board certified Surgeon and it cost 2600.00. |
Lulu had surgery Dec. 2010 by a board certified surgeon. Everything included...$2200. Well worth the costs associated with going to a board certified surgeon! |

well im just confused. I was relieved when the vet said it was no big deal and wouldnt be but 400 roughly, but worried that he's' undershootin it a bit. Or just quotein me the surgery itslelf. We do live in a smaller area not a big major city so I dont know if local would be the difference or not. I think one day I will call other vets to get thier opinnion and maybe call the office of the guy that our vet said would be the most local person to do the surgery and ask them spacificly. The vet told us that the place to have it done for our area would be next couple of towns/ counties over. So, I think I will call just to see and double check if thats for ALL of it or just the surgery. But he seemed to say that his mom had her yorkie done and it was just 400. Dont know if that was years ago or what... Vet says he probably wont need surgery for a while, and with the supplements he might get it strengthened and hopefully not have anymore probs w it slipping. But Id like to prepare and know my numbers just in case. What in the world would I do if it were thousands and I cant afford it????? I told my darn husband to check into insurance a long time ago. But as always.... Now it wouldnt be covered. :O( Grrr. Heres hoping its more affordable here in the "small town usa". |

the price here includes everything in the process. But here they only do 1 knee at a time. |
We haven't had LP surgery on Maggie yet, but the vet said they have a surgeon that comes into their clinic that does the surgery and that would be $1000 per leg. He said if we took her to the veterinary surgical center it would be almost double that. Not sure but it sounded like it was the same doctor/surgeon. I would confirm that before having the surgery done. For now we are holding off unless/until Maggie's condition becomes chronic. So far it has only been a problem for her once. |
Buster had LP surgery back in April. One leg was about $3,500.00, maybe a little more as there were other issues involved. But, he went to a Board Certified Surgeon. It really makes a difference. That included all follow up visits, medicine, an overnite stay in the hospital and numerous emails between us and the surgeons coordinator, before and after the surgery (especially after). When calling or asking around, put the word "surgeon" behind Board Certified. Most will tell you they aren't surgeons. A lot of vets will do the surgery much cheaper but they aren't surgeons. I'm glad I took him to a surgeon as a regular vet could not have done the type of surgery that was done on Buster. He also has grade 4 LP in the other leg, eventually he will need surgery again. |
