I feel like giving up on finding a puppy! A few weeks ago, I found an awesome breeder in my area. She had an adorable little girl. I fell in love. I put my deposit down and everything. Well she took her to the vet today and it turns out, the puppy has bad knees. The breeder explain to me in a few years, the puppy might need knee surgery. I could tell in her voice, she was hesitant about selling her with bad knees. :( Now Im back to square one. I feel like I wanna cry my eyes out. |

Sorry to hear this, but it is better to know now than find out later. At least the breeder was honest. |
Did the breeder tell you what grade of LP the puppy had? If it was not high then the puppy could be ok and not need surgey. I am sorry this happened. Try not to feel like giving up. Their is the right yorkie puppy waiting for you. |
Your post sounds sad and full of frustration,I am so sorry. Dont give up,maybe step back and take a break from looking. Hang in there and good luck. |

Luxating patella is so common in Yorkies. Some never need surgery. Puppies knees could probably tighten a bit (or get worse). Surgery for LP isn't the worst thing in the world. If you're looking for a totally healthy pup, I'm sure one will come along in time. Is your heart set on a young puppy or would you consider a rescue? An older breeder female? I've found that the few great Yorkie breeders tend to have waiting lists. Have you gotten your name on any? Filled out apps? |

I would like to get a puppy. Around 12-16 weeks. I know I can take a chance and still get her. I just dont wanna have her and 2 years down the road; she'll need surgery. I have a good job, but I dont think I'd be able to pay thousands in vet bills. Thats another reason I dont wanna get a rescue. |

Rhett and Scarlett are both rescues that came to me as puppies. Both have perfect knees and hips. Not all dogs end up in rescues because of health problems. If your heart is truly set on this particular dog, then you can begin setting aside money now for the possibility of surgery later. It may become necessary and then again it may not ever be needed. It's does sound like you are on the right track with the breeder since she has been honest with you about the pups knees. |

I just went through same thing :( Keep at it girly! I've been looking for 6 months for that perfect baby. It takes time to find your doggie soulmate but it is so worth it in the end :) |
If they worsen, they would be thousands to fix. Whatever pup you end up with, please consider getting insurance. Thousands of dollars do need to be available for non-routine vetting. Pups don't always end up in rescue over medical issues. We just rescued a pup. He has a couple minor issues, but should be fine. His insurance covers pre-existing issues as long as there were no symptoms before the waiting period is up, etc. So even if you get an unhealthy dog that seemed healthy at the time of purchase, there is still hope that things will be covered. Your perfect pup will come along. |

Depends on the insurance and the waiting period. None will cover it this time because it is already diagnosed. If pup had been with you for 6 months with no symptoms and then it came up (and vet didn't diagnose it yet), then most companies would pay. |
im sorry to hear this but i know that u will find the right yorkie for u :) i know this because ive been searching for 2 years for my little one |
Is she willing to place her, not sell her, this money could go toward surgery. If you really believe in the breeder and the breeders breeding program, this might be a good option. |

My cavalier has LP on both legs and had surgery before 1 year on one, with statement from the vet that the other one would probably need it soon. The 2nd has never required it, and Cooper is not in pain. He's almost 7 years old. It seems like there are so many unknowns with any puppy, even from the best of breeders. If the breeder were willing to do this, at least you'd have the money set aside. |
At least the breeder was honest,u dont get that much these days. dont give up on your puppy search. As far as the LP I just found out my guy has it in his rear left leg. The vet said they rank it on a scale of 1-4. He ranked mine between a 1-2. Said he wasnt majorly bad and it could clear up and he may never have trouble w it again. He put him on supplements and said itd be best to keep him on it if he'll stay on em. I was soo worried at first because I thought if it didnt get better and he needed surgery what would I do? I read surgery costs online and it was like 2-3 thousand. I thought id have to put him down because i couldnt fo that much. I was soo worried about the "future". But after more questions rom my vet, it wasnt as bad as I foresaw. He said the sugery was around 400 give or take. Much more doable than thousands that i read. What I would suggest would be wether you got this puppy or a different one might be to call ur vet or animal sugeon in your area and get price quotes to see what the costs would be in ur area. Because even if u get a puppy that has no problems, doesnt mean he wont eventually. But check out what things u "might ' be faced w so u can prepare for or prevent. Im thinking about doing away w these store bought treats and just giving them these supplement chews and "good stuff" that might aid in their health. Good luck in ur puppy search. |
I just spoke with the breeder and the LP is already pretty bad. She said shes above a grade 1 now. Im just going to keep searching. My gut tells me to find another puppy. :( |
My vet ranked mine at a two or less and didnt act like that was too horrible. But keep in mind though that they can still get that LP and Id say the majority will. Mine is 2 and he's now havin the problem. So from my experiance, if you get a seemingly healthy puppy, still prepare for this. Maybe talk to ur vet about preventative measures for things and just prepare. Cause even if they dont have it when u get em, dont mean they wont or cant get it. And dont wait too long on insurance. Wish id have got it soon as I got him bedore he started havin probs. |
Just wanted to put out there that it is a good idea to put aside money for "non-routine" vet care. Just because you have a healthy puppy doesn't mean that a few years down the road you won't have to spend those thousands on something for your dog. Which I'm assuming by your avatar that youalready have a dog and probably know this. :) But I do agree about starting off as healthy as possible. We have two rescues...both mutts....that are healthy as horses. My mom's schnauzer from a breeder has started having seizures. So you just never really know. :( |
