This is taken directly from the site.

This dog is not an owner surrender and was a stray. The owner has 5 days by state law to claim the dog. Whoever you spoke with is misinformed of the laws of the state of Texas. If they will not give the dog back to the owner then if it were me I would stand right at the shelter and call the Greenville Police Department.

That pulls up Greenville, south Carolina. We're in Texas. But she's in a small town outside Greenville and the shelter is in the same county. Texas states unless a person has cared for a dog for ore than 14 days, they do not own it, it's still a stray and they allow for 3 days to give the owner adequate time to find their animal. Jana called the shelter and the lady wouldn't even speak to her- Jana told her she had filed a police report for her dog being missing/stolen. Police said they were going to go talk to the lady and see what's up. When Jana talked to the police she told them what happened and that tinker bell was left outside and shouldn't have been, got out of the fence and that a neighbor turned her in to the shelter, but that the neighbor never tried to contact her or her family. Supposedly the dog was turned in Monday so tomorrow is 3 days.

I cant find anything about this shelter online, so I'm wondering if it's even legitimate? Jana is going to be there at 8 am to try and get tinker bell back. I told her to take officers with her... I'll keep y'all posted as to what happens.

I am not much help, but I pray that things work out for you!!! I will keep your friend's husband in my prayer. I can't imagine how devastated she must be right now...:( All I know is that the shelter won't adopt a dog out immediately after it enters the shelter. They often hold for at least 3-5 days for the owner to come claim the dog.

Here's hope it is resolved quickly.

Is this the shelter?

Greenville Animal Control Shelter

The place is FULL of puppies and kitten. Do people just not spay/neuter in Greenville TX? :thumbdown:thumbdown

Here is an email address too:
animalcontrol@ci.greenville.tx.us

I thought you said the dog was dropped off on Sunday?

The one lesson that we should all learn from this story is that we need to CHIP our animals and they should ALWAYS have a collar and tags on! ALWAYS!!!!!! If one or both of these things were to have been done this little girl would not be in a shelter right now. The owner would have been given a call and someone could have come to pick her up. There just is NO EXCUSE to not keep basic contact information on a pet. Every story that I can remember always has "she didn't have ID's". :(

My lil friend 07-21-2011 05:15 AM

Chips and collars are VERY important, but collars can be removed by neighbors that are being mean. Chips work if the shelter/vet bother to scan. Mine all wear collars at all time (even in the house so I can hear them jingle) and Mina is chipped. A chip would help resolve this because the owner could ask (with officers present) that she be scanned.
It is becomming obvious that the "shelter" probably isn't really a registered shelter and that the person running it is just really wanting $$. How very sad for the owner and especially the little furbaby.
I will continue to pray that thing end as they should.

Praying for a quick resolution and for this baby to be returned to her Mama... and prayers that the DH recovers quickly and completely....

Should we email the shelter???

Email that would be interesting. I was thinking that maybe a call to channel 4 or 5 in our area might help get Tinkerbell back where she belongs. Channel 4 actually does hep straighten things out sometimes.

McheleM 07-21-2011 06:57 AM

No, this lady is in Celeste, TX. I can't find a shelter or rescue for Celeste.
And no, no offense to country people but the Greenville area is podunkville and their idea of fun is having 10 or 12 dogs running around on their 5 acres and another 8 cats, for mice in the barn.

Haven't heard from Jana yet.

The dog was dropped off Monday according to the lady I spoke to. Mom and I went Sunday evening to pick tinker bell up and she wasn't in the back yard.

That was our thought. I was talking to another YT member on the phone last night and we talked about this exact thing! Maybe the neighbor that took her in is a friend or something and gets a cut, who knows???

McheleM 07-21-2011 07:22 AM

I just got off the phone with a guy from the Greenville shelter. He said the 3 day rule is for government run shelters only and that private run shelters and rescues do not have to adhere to that guideline. I told him the ladys name and the Celeste shelter and she is a privately run shelter and can essentially make her own rules and do what she wants. He suggested contacting an attorney.

I just sent Jana a text to let her know and see what she found out/what happened. Hoping I hear from her soon.

Were the police ever in contact w this shelter owner? Also, if she has a family atty she uses, perhaps they could make a quick call to the shelter.

Idk. I haven't talked to Jana yet to know if the police contacted the shelter. I'm going to the hospital in an hour or so to check on her husband, so I'll find out.
