Barking at strangers Hi. I have a question regarding my baby, Belle. She is a little over a year, and we got her when she was about 7 months old. When we are walking her or if new people come around her, she will bark and usually not stop for most of the time. I wanted to know if I just keep walking her and let her bark, or do I need to do something else. Thanks you all for your input. I love her so much and want to help her not be so afraid of people. |
Good question. Its so easy to pick up the little ones and keep walking while trying to hush them. However, I saw an episode of "Its me or the dog" and Victoria trains dogs who bark to "focus" on their master and ignore the person who is walking by or whatever the object is that the dog is barking at. So, say you are walking and you see someone coming towards you and your pup starts to bark. You would stop, put yourself between your dog and the person walking, say "focus" and treat the dog if she watches you and quits barking (or something along those lines). Something else I have seen is to have other people give your dog a treat so your dog gets the idea that others are friends and not enemies. Good luck with the training! |
