Scary to use a kennel Hi, Im a newbie I'm planning to board my Leo for two weeks. I'm very nervous and sad. This is the first time for him to stay in a kennel. I curious to hear some experiences of how your doggies act after pick them up. Do you have problem with accidents in the house?,doggies act different? ect ect. Thanks very much for your help!!! I have personally never used a kennel, however, I did visit a number of them when I was trying to decide what to do with mine when I was going away. Most of the kennels admitted that dogs backslide on housetraining when they come home. This is because a lot of kennels force the dogs to go in their enclosure and then just clean it up. I would make sure the kennel is letting them out a number of times a day- at least equal to the amount of times they are used to going out. I was also very nervous about leaving my dog in that environment and in the end opted for an in home sitter instead. This way mine have one on one attention and are kept to their same schedule/ routine, in a familiar place. No matter how long I am gone, the dogs are always exactly the same when I come home. |
Im afraid that Im no help either. I cannt aford to board 6 dogs, its just cheaper to have a house sitter for me. |
Have never boarded mine, except for grooming or spay/neuter. Can't afford to leave 4. I use to board my Cairns and they did fine but they stayed outside most of the time. Good Luck. |
If all possible I would try to get someone to come to your home and dog sit. I just think it would be so much less stressful on you and him Maybe a family member could take him. If not i would really check the kennel out well. Lots of times they do not get let out much :( |
Ian goes to Camp Bow Wow for day camp, and overnight camp. We're in GA, but this one may be near you... Camp Bow Wow® - Kentwood - Home |
I boarded Roxie at the vet's last summer for 5 days while my whole family went on vacation. Normally I would have left her with my parents, but they came with us on the trip. I didn't have any issues with her when we picked her up. I think she was just incredibly happy to be home. I have to board her again in September the weekend of my brother's wedding. I am actually trying to find a better place. I hate the thought of her sitting in a little cage all day, and not being able to run around or play at all. |
I have never boarded by dogs for two reasons one is that I have 5 dogs and it would be a massive expense and two is that we really haven't had anyplace to go having our own home takes most of our money but there is a place near my home that if I had to leave my dogs there I would feel very comfortable. |
I've not boarded Bella yet either. My groomer boards pets, and I think that's who I would go to. I've seen her with the dogs and she's very kind. She's reasonable also and she feeds good pet food to her boarders. |
Thanks to everybody to respond to my concerns. I dont have a person that I can help me to take care my Leo. Anyway, if I find somebody, Leo has to stay most of the day in his grate because I dont like him to be running around then nobody is at home. I feel bad thinking of him spending more of the day in his grate until somebody can come and take care him. I found a noce place where the owners love dogs. I left him on night there and Leo since to react just fine. I'm just worry about the about of days that I will be gone. Thanks eveybody! |
I won't be much help either. I have never boarded either one of my boys. We have only spent 1 night away from them, and I looked into all the boarding/daycare places in my area then. I didn't like any of them, and would have stayed home over leaving them there. The places were clean, and some had "condos" you could upgrade to. Even the condos I was not comfortable with. One of the places had these HUGE gaps under the fence outside (which was RIGHT next to the freeway). We told the people that our dogs would be able to fit under there, and they just said that they would put some concrete blocks under part of it. Yeah  that'll work. So, my first choice was to ask the breeder to keep them for the night. She was busy at the time, so I had a friend come over and stay at my house with them. It worked out great, they slept in our bed with her like they do with us, and didn't get stressed. I paid her $50. If we ever go on vacation again, I will ask the breeder first, then some other yorkie lovers in my state if they can watch them. Even if I have to drive a couple hours, it's so worth it for the peace of mind that my babies are with someone I trust, and will get great care and not just thrown into a pen and ignored. |
Sorry I use at home pet sitter too. I never board mine. Boarding 5 dogs would cost too much, $20 a day for each Yorkie and $28 a day for the Lab because she is over 50 lbs. That is $108 per day X 7 days = $ 756.00 and that is one of the lower end places. |
Kennels are just that a kennel...no matter how nice the owner is and how much they love dogs it is still a place where diseases can be caught. Yorkies are so prone to bowel upsets in these type settings.. Can you get a pet sitter or let your vet board incase of stress illness...what about the breeder...many will care for their puppies...I took care of some all their life..I really miss them as much as the owner when the go the Yorkie Heaven. |

I only kennel SophieKate at her vets office, she has been going there since she was about 4 months old (when I traveled for work) and they are all very familliar with her. My vets office has a special room for small dogs only, the runs do not face the large dogs, that would make SophieKate nervous for sure. If it were any other situation I probably would not board her but instead have her dog walker come in as a dogsitter. As far as training, Sophie Kate used to take a few steps back when she was potty training but now I have her on a schedule and the Vet office follows it. My advice is if you do kennel make sure you go there before and inspect the kennels/runs, ask about outdoor time and if they offer make sure your Yorkie is not left outside unattended. |
