death by golden retriever

our family rented a pet friendly cottage (pretty popular inkorea) because my cousin wanted to take all the dogs on the mini vacation with us.

It was Mickey & Coco (yorkies), Chelsea (westie terrier) and Baily (golden retriever)

All the dogs seems to get along fine walking around checking out the place.

Mickey really likes big dogs, especially Golden Retrievers because he's used to seeing and playing with them back when he used to live in Canada.

We were all getting ready for lunch and I'm clicking away with my camera. Then we heard a yelp and i jumped to see Baily the golden retriever had mickey in a headlock and bit him on the leg. I know I should have remained calm but i screamed and started crying while my mom ran to break them apart.

Mickey's blood was spurting everywhere. Because we were up inthe cottage country, we weren't sure where the nearest vet was. Thankfully an iphone came into rescue and found out the nearest vet we went.

The vet said that MIckey was extremely lucky because it could have been worse (a little higher or lower could have instantly killed him) and that my mom was fast enough to break them apart.

Mickey only had one puncture wound but its pretty deep. The vet said with medication and shots and disinfecting he will be fine. Mickey will go and see his regular vet tomorrow.

All of yesterday mickey was in a lot of pain but today he jumped up on the couch and walked around so I think he's feeling much better.

I was worried that because of the stress he might not do well because he is 15. but i think he's on the road to a great recovery. This morning he went up to baily who was not allowed to come in and had to stay in the foyer tied up with the door closed and barked at him in anger. I think he wanted to say you did this to me. oh bless his fiestiness.

Let Mickey's story be a warning. Mickey did nothing but to follow Baily and got almost killed. i always thought golden retrievers were friendly and not vicious. Please always make sure your baby is on a leash when walking because I definately do not wish this experience on anyone else. (If i learned anything its definately dont let the cute face fool you)

I on the other hand have to learn to remain calm and act quickly instead of screaming and crying which probably startled mickey and then later hyper ventiliating and then fainting..

Both Mickey & I are fine but please keep him in mind so he can get through this :)

I still believe large dogs and small dogs dont belong together. Even when raised together all it takes is a bad mood. Been there, wont go there again!

I must say these are me feelings too. It could be a sudden instance of unknown reason for pain in the large dog and out of reflex, they lash out at the little dog. With average size dogs, it may be just fine....but my mind tells me, not with these little ones.

So glad to hear Mickey is fine, but what a scare. To know it could have been a much different really is a scary thought.

Oh my goodness !! Glad to hear Mickey is doing well.

CouversMom 07-17-2011 08:25 AM

How scary! I'm glad to hear that Mickey is doing alright.

I am always on high alert when we visit with my MIL who has two large dogs (sheltie and border collie). I don't think I could ever own a large dog with yorkies... it would be too much stress.

Happy to hear Mickey is ok, there was another YT member on here last week, her Lab killed her Maltese, and now she is looking to rehome the lab. She keeps her Yorkie in the house away from the Lab.

so glad he is ok. I had something like this happen with Remy and a poodle...
so I understand.

agreed

Growing up our toy poodle was attacked by a Golden from the neighborhood- it was very scary, she had many internal injuries and was very lucky to survive- although she was never the same after- she had a number of lingering issues from the attack, both physical and mental.

I would personally never trust having a small dog and a big dog together- my two small ones adore each other yet they have their days where they get in a bad mood for one reason or another and let each other know it- I could never trust this to happen if there was a huge size difference.

So glad the little guy is doing as well as possible. My little dog Jilly was attacked by a Dalmation and I know what you went and are going through. It is hard to remain cool and calm when your own emotions are boiling over but you are doing the right thing. You guys take care and don't forget to check to be sure the Golden stays healthy. You want your vet to know should that dog start to become ill for the obvious reasons.

The ONLY big dog that I have ever trusted around my little ones is 2bits. He is 1/2 shepard,1/2 huskey,,now 15 yrs old. He is our great big brother to all of the little ones. We are still careful to make sure that the little dogs are not allowed to be in his face and if he and one of the poodles play,I am standing right there beside them. Playtime together only last about 5min and then it is time for something else. A big dog, nomatter how loving, can get carried away just like a little one. But they are so much bigger and dont realize that they could hurt a little friend.
When out in public,if someone tell me that their big dog wont hurt my baby. I tell them very politely that they know their dog but I dont and to restrain them. It would only take ONE bite. I have been attacked by StBenards on two separate occasions while hold a small dog. Scary stuff.

I am very glad Mickey will be ok. I Agree that it only takes a second for tradgedy to happen. And bigger dogs are not a good mix with smaller ones. No matter how a big dog seems the little dog will always be in danger. And will always be the one to get the worse end of it. Goldens have a great reputation of being a family dog.

Marlee12107 07-17-2011 02:46 PM

So glad the outcome was not any worse. I have had bad experiences with a golden & a lab. But Have also had a lab I would have trusted with any pet I had. We have 2 labs now but the little ones go out in the front yard & never in the back with the labs. I just won't chance it.......Hugs, Wanda

When I read the title of this thread I was expecting terrible news. I'm still very sorry about the pain that watching this caused you, and the pain your little one went through with the attack. Thankfully, Mickey is okay and I hope you continue to update us on his recovery.
Hugs,
Rose

Thank you everyone!!!

I knew this dog was trouble. Because before we even left, my baby coco was walking past the goldy to my uncle and he turned around and growled showing teeth.

I told my cousin that I'm slightly afraid to have Baily around but my cousin said baily is fine and won't harm the other dogs...

But a lesson i learned is that you never know
