Does your dog ignore their name? I have had my little babies for four weeks now and they are doing great. Max is responds to his name very well, but Abby - meh. I am not sure if she does not quite recognize it or is just ignoring me - I am going with ignoring me. If I ask Max where Abby is he will go looking for her - even he knows her name. I call Abby by name and she turns and walks away - really!!!! How can so much attitude be in a 2.5lb puppy! Max will even look at her when I call her name as if to say, "she's talking to you." |
"Charge" her name by calling it and giving her a high-value treat such as pieces of hot dogs or chicken when she comes. She will very soon quite ignoring the name when called. Anytime in the future she seems to be lapsing into ignoring it, "recharge" with a recall/treating session with a treat so good and juicy she can't ignore the smell. She will very soon associate that name with automatically running to you and forget all about the treat over time. It will become totally reflexive. |

It's not too early to start training basic commends. My Doodlebug is the only one of my three that I've had while still a puppy. We got him at 12 weeks and within 2 weeks he knew sit, stay, paw, rollover, high five with basic hand signals as well as voice commands. Get down on the floor and work with both of them. Use the teeniest pieces of treats to reward. Puppies catch on very quickly. |
Thanks for the advise. I will work on it. I have never had a dog so indignant before - she is certainly a character. I will have to figure out a special treat for her (yes, I have a task for the weekend) and Max. Max is not going for the sit command, but when I say down and tap the ground he is learning to lay down. Thanks again. |
Oh, Megansmomma, you are absolutely right if you are referring to daily regular training but we are talking about charging a name for recall training - one of the most critical things you EVER want your dog to learn so I would like to disagree with you just a little bit on the name-charging issue. That and the "stop", "stay" commands have got to be taught with the greatest reward known to dogdom attached to them. I'll just give you my quick "take" on it and ya'll can take it or leave it regarding recall and "stop", "stay". Recall training as OP posted seems to be something we do occasionally when our dog stops responding in a critical manner to its name being called and that instance of training is what I was addressing. This is appa ently a dog that knows its name but has stopped responding. To me this instance has got to be addrssed as a critcal issue. It usually is only done every so often and is rare training and a high-value meat treat is hard to beat with a dog. The dog may get a whole half a hotdog in that training session and you won't need to repeat that high-value charging session for weeks or months - so it should not really hurt the dog's health. A charging session such as I described related to name ignoring is not something you even need to do every day or every week. It would be like us having an ice cream sundae once every few months - not great for us but like a half a hotdog every so often, it shouldn't damage actual health. Now if you are training daily at something, I would do as Megansmomma says and use a healthy treat. I use Tibbe's own kibble for treats - those are his regular training "paychecks" and bless his heart he works his heart out for them. But when I am training recall to his name, I charge his name with a high value treat of loud-smelling meat. Liver would probably smell louder but I never have any of that on hand. I have personally attempted charging Tibbe's name with green beens(a veggie fav or his) but it is not nearly as dear to him as hotdog! He responds but not like his life depends on it. So if your dog responds wonderfully and like he is going to break his neck to get to a veggie treat, use that but if it is not really, really dear to him, I would change to a high-smelling meat treat for name charging. My son who is a dog trainer uses only meat treats for name-charge treats as he says it is so critical for the dog to attach only the highest value smell and satisfaction sensation with that name. You can of course praise and kiss and love him when he comes but the good old loudsmelling,just-cooked chicken or just microwaved hotdog will truly drive your dog nuts to get to it when you call his name. You really want that dog to come running for all he's worth when he hears that name called and most doggies run hardest for some type of hot meat. Then, for your regular training, use the more healthy type treats and lots of patience and praise, love and positive reinforcement and your baby will work well. Name charging, though, to me - and to my son who does this for his living - remains something sooooo important that you need to get right on that as one day your dog's life could depend on whether or not he comes when you call. Also teach the command "Stop" or "Stay" and charge it with a very high value treat - your dog's life could one day depend on how well it follows that command. I hope things go well and before long your baby comes runing to beat the bell when that name is called! |
Great suggestions! I am going to use this for 'come'. Mina only ignores me on come, she has all of the other basic commands down. Come seems to be her will or mine and it needs to be mine. Her favorite food for treats? tiny slivers of real parm cheese,I buy the canister at Sam's and give her literally one sliver at a time. My husband says it is doggie crack. |

My suggestion would about this size or very slightly larger. O |

I hope our occasional readers will follow your advice and use only the most nutritious treats for our babies as we don't want them filled up with gunk in those precious Yorkie bellies when they could have lots of vitamins and minerals and even some good fiber working to help health and training at the same time! You, as always, have our babies' best interests at heart, Megansmomma!!! As one who does all that you do with rescue and saving dog's lives and futures, when you post, we all listen and take much heed. I will always bow to your expertise in anything, girl. <3 |
Does your dog ignore their name? When it suits her ;) |
She wont ignore it in time. |
Does she hear other noises and react to them like being startled? I remember when we suspected our rescued collie was hard of hearing we told the vet and when Sebastian wasn't looking the vet clapped his hand real hard behind his head. He didn't even move. The vet kind of smiled and said "yep, deaf as a door knob." |
I wondered about a hearing issue, but nope she can hear just fine. I think she is just being stubborn because she can. I started working with her this afternoon with "special treats". She does it because she can. Same reason she eats poop - cause she can. Max does not want to be left out so I am working with him on sit. He is funny - I ask him where Abby is and he will go look for her. Yes, she is the wanderer. Max is a quick learner - Abby has already taught him to eat poop!!! |
The treats I got are the Blue Bits. They are about the size of a edemame - but in a nice little heart shape. I am very stingy with these because I know we this will be a work in progress with little miss "I only have to listen when I want to" Abby - LOL! I have been breaking each heart into 3 or 4 pieces. This is the first time I have given them something other than their dry food or biscuits. They think any little piece is a great reward. For the potty pad training, I have been using the Peanut Butter tube that Kong makes. (Could buy a large jar of jiffy for what these cost!) I squeeze out a tiny bit and let them lick it off after they have gone potty where they are supposed to. In fairness, it has been over a month and I still have the same tube. |
My Abby and YT members are genius!!! In less than 24 hours, Abby is responding to her name. Even better, this morning she picked up a piece of poop (I was making coffee and not watching her 100% - it's COFFEE!). Normally when I catch her, she runs from me with the poop in her mouth and tries to gobble it on the way. Anyway, I called her name, she dropped the poop and came running right over to me. I am not sure who is smarter - Abby for learning so quick or me for knowing go to YT for advice. Thanks. |
You two have got it goin' on! |
