Two Yr. Old Ex-Broodie? Hello! I very recently adopted a two year old ex broodie. The woman didn't want her any longer due to the fact that she only produced one-two puppies at a time. So, being that I have been wanting a second yorkie, that was not a puppy, I got her. She has no social kills whatsoever, however, she is doing pretty good in my book considering her circumstances. My other yorkie definitely helps her. She does allow me to hold her, does eventually settle in my lap, and follows me everywhere. So far i have provided her with a very calm, loving atmosphere. Yet still, can anyone give me tips on how to gently encourage her to come out of her shell. I should be a pro at this as I used to rehome racing greyhounds. Still, I would like to hear from those with more yorkie experience than me. My concern is that she has an underdeveloped nervous system being that she has never really been a pet. Can this be mended. I do need to add that although she did come from a breeding kennel, she was clean and healthy. Thanks for any input! |
oh my. I am so glad she found you!! The kennel may have been clean and healthy but the fact that you said she was not socialize speaks volumes. But... now she is your baby:) I would say just love her. Keep the new experiences simple and calm. She will adjust and be so happy. This puts a smile on my face that she is in her new forever home and does not have to have puppies anymore. Take care |
Oh I am so glad you have her now. As you know there is a magic window of time to socialize puppies. But adults can learn physical affection and new rules. Just keep doing what you are doing, love her and she will bloom. |
Jada is a re-home breeder and she was shy when we first adopted her. Little by little she has came out of her shell. She will play with us now and is a very loving little girl. She is a little pistol too and very protective of her home. She didn't know how to play and she has one toy that she is attached to and only that toy. It took about 6 months for her to get over her shyness and over two years to finally learn what playing is. |
So happy you gave her a loving home. |
Thank you all for the encouragement. I have caught glimpses of her trying to play. Then she stops as if to think "what the heck did I just do?". I was hoping because she's still relatively young, she will socialize sooner than later. She LOVES being outside! I'll try for pics. She is extremely light silvery blue with red points. Her name in Tangy. |
Such good news. I'm glad to hear it. |
Tangy is lucky she was a low producer  Glad she found a new home! |
Bless you. Patience and love is all she needs right now. |
My little Willow we adopted in November was a breeder release to rescue. She is 6 yr old. When she first came she was so scared of everything and very shy and was would just run off. Now 8 months later she is still scared of certain things but she has come out of shell so much. Always asking to be held. Just let her work things out at her pace. Now I also had two others that were pupymill rescues that ended up in rescue. My late Audrey bless her little heart she was 8 when we adopted her and she knew nothing about humans and was so afraid. Everything scared her. It took about two years for her to finally warm up. We just took it one day at a time with her. We were lucky to have her 4 yrs. |
I am so glad to learn of this aspect about yorkietalk. I spent years rehoming greyhounds, and was never so thankful to find a good home for one. That is why I took this step with this little sweetie. The difference is that racing greyhounds do have consistent handling by humans. |
