Long hair and poop? Ok I have a yorkie with a short haircut. I have to keep his butt hair trimmed really close so that his poo doesn't get stuck in his hair. I will be getting a puppy next year or soon after that after we move across the country to Las Vegas :D She will have long hair, I hope. How does one keep the butt area clean and free of poop if they have long hair? Do I just need to add fiber to Bentley's food to prevent that from happening even on my short haired baby? I'm just confused. I feed him canned food TOTW. But with a lot of what he ate previously he still had the poopy butt problem. We've tried him on many different foods, most of which he refused to eat. Should I try adding plain pumpkin? |
Yep, this can be a problem sometimes. I will be eager to hear what others tell you, but I will share my experiences with this. When I have Cali groomed, or I do it myself usually, I do what the groomers call a "hygiene trim" around the anus and the long hair below and around that area. Have to be cautious though because you don't want to trim too close and give them a rash. This works well for us and we don't have alot of problems with it. If you sometimes get a little "dingle berry" you can just cut it off and that lets you know an area you may need to trim in the future. If you are going to show in confirmation that may not be acceptable though, I'm not sure about that. |
Ah ok. So the hair is trimmed ok. That makes sense. :) Thanks! I was thinking all the hair would be long and that the hair above the anus would be hanging down over it. I never thought about the hygiene trim. I have lots to learn! |
Rosie has the long hair around her bottom. We really don't have a huge problem with this. However, every once in a while her poop will get caught. I keep baby wipes handy and just pick it out. Lol. It is not a problem unless she has a loose stool. Then I have to wash her bottom! |
My male dog I keep his hair trimed short no problem with the booty area. My female's hair is longer and we only trim her hair. We do just a little trim around the booty I guess what you are calling the hygiene trim. |
I guess it just depends on the dog then :) Interesting. I suggested to dad that we try feeding canned pumpkin every day to Bentley and see if his poo situation improves. Lately it seems like it's every day that we are washing his butt. :P |
When Uni was a puppy she did get poop stuck in her butt constantly. I think it was bad food choices that were making her poops not hard enough. If they are hard they usually kind of fall out, and not very sticky. Occasionally though she will ingest a hair (usually mine or bf's ) and if she poops it may only part way come out and the poop will hang there. You can NOT just pull out the hair, you can do major damage. Carefully find the hair and cut it, leave the rest inside, and the next time they poop it will come out. Whenever she has some cling-ons she freezes anyway, so she makes it easy for me to cut out the hair. |
Aww that poor baby. lol My Bentley ate floss once. Only once since I'm totally more careful now. And it was sticking out of his butt :( I gently pulled and kept pulling, it didnt get caught on anything inside,, I was super careful not to hurt him. It finally all came out. Poor baby. My dog froze and was acting funny that's how I knew something was wrong. But when he just gets poop on him unless it's really bad he doesn't act funny. So I always check his butt after his daily walk as that's when he usually poops. He is potty pad trained though. But I feel like I'm always checking his butt for poopers. I will try canned pumpkin, hopefully he'll actually eat it. lol So picky! |
