YT's opinions Do you guys think there is a difference in traning a boy yorkie and a girl one? I was in petsmart today and a girl had a girl yorkie and I asked her was it hard to train her and she said no the boys are the hardest to train.... Them I thought of my Bentely and Ive been havin a hard time training him like he listened when he wants and it get so frustrating and then if I yell at him he just look the other way and continues sittin there :-( n e suggestions on better training skills? |
I think to train any yorkie, or other dog you have to grab their interest. Get their favorite treat or something even better, like diced chicken, etc. Try to remove other distractions. When Princess sees she has my full attention she runs for a ball so I put all toys up before we start. Make sure it is a completely 100% positive training session. If your temper flares your pup is going to associate it with the command you're teaching & really become uninterested. If you're moving your pup into the desired position, i.e. sit, be gentle & slow doing it so he doesn't get scared. Don't move to the next command until the first one is mastered. Basically it just takes a lot of short, fun sessions. When I want to quickly teach something I will train for 5-10 minutes every hour or two. Yorkies especially seem to really love pleasing their owners, once they understand they've something awesome they'll want to do it again. It can just take time sometimes, IMO I don't think one gender would be more difficult than the other. Good luck.:) |
My female Tessie was the most stubborn and difficult. The boys were much easier. My newest female Sassy has been easy because she just watches everybody else. Tessie will NOT potty outside and she is 2 years old. She doesn't want me to see her potty so her pads are in the laundry room so she has privacy. |
Awwwww thanks guys |
I heard boys are easier to train because they are more eager to please. But I've had both and I think you just need to have consistancy regardless of the gender of the puppy. Gizzy was easy to potty train, granted lately we've been having a few accidents but I blame that on him going through "terrible twos!" Hehe!:p |
Yea it seems like he just listens wen he wants to but I'm Tryin to be patient |
My male was easier to train- in general he picks up on things quicker and is more eager to please me so I think that is what helped me. The girl is trained as well now, but I had to be on top of her a lot more and it took a lot longer- she was over a year before I felt like I could leave her alone, uncrated without coming back to an accident. So, I think it is probably just more about individual personality then a gender thing. |
Yea im now realizing that it's gon to take a few more months |
My female was easy to train. But I used consistentcy. I think with males you have to worry about them marking. But if the male is young when fixed he does not go through that at all. |
I think my Yorkies have me trained. Rubyboy is 7 and will occasionly mark in the house if he is upset or Gracie is in season. Gracie was not housebroken when I got her at 8 mo.s old. It took about 6 weeks to train her, but she never would use pee pads. She is 2 and is fully outside trained. She needs to go out about every 4 to 6 hours and still wakes me at night. Abba and Ginny Joy are being peepad trained they are still puppies. |
That's true about neutering before males start marking. Moses still squats to tinkle and doesn't mark at all. He was a full 6 months old before I felt we had turned a potty corner with him. Now if I can just keep him from tipping over my plant in my front room! |
What do u guys mean when u say "mark"? |
I think they are just like children & each have their own unique personality. Some give you their full attention & are easy to train, while others get easily distracted by things going on around them and require a little more effort to train. |

My boy was neutered at 6 1/2 months and does not mark in the house but will mark every little clump of weed he sees on our walks. lol As far as training, both of mine were pretty easy to train. Maggie was really easy as she's very submissive and wants to please you. Hot Rod just picked things up really easily. |
Ooooh I c bentley just burned 6months but idk if I want to get him neutered lately he has been peeing other places than the floor but he usually uses his peepad |
