Orijen Puppy We have been feeding our new baby yorkie "Bella" Wellness Puppy food. The breeder we got her from began feeding the Wellness Puppy since the puppies had stopped nursing. I had researched food and asked him to start feeding the Wellness Puppy. In the mean time, I had bought a small bag of Orijen Puppy. I have been giving the Orijen puppy food as "treat's only but Bella is getting very smart. She is now picking at her food when I give her the Wellness puppy food. She eats it like,, ahhh it's food.. so I guess I'll eat it. he ate hardly any of it this morning. I gave her 7 little pieces (it's very small kibble- Orijen) and she devoured it. She absolutely loves this Orijen food. She will literally do cartwheels for it. I will switch her slowly over to it but I would like some feedback if anyone has fed this to their Yorkie puppies. I've read some things online about the high protein content and how some put down the idea and while others rave about the food and the great protein and quality of the food. (Orijen) The Wellness Puppy is 27% protein and the Orijen is 40% protein. Bella also (per our vet okaying) chews on her bully stick which is 80% protein and 0 fat. Vet said she could eat 1/2 of this bully stick every day. Although I only give it to her once a day and a whole stick will last her about 2 wks. (the bully sticks are made by "True Chews") 100%b rawhide free and they keep Bella occupied for a while. She loves the orijen and I'd sure like to give it to her but I'm nervous. I have had yorkies for the last 13 yrs - but I know MUCH more now then I did back then and years ago, we were not feeding a great food bc I wasn't aware of the foods and qualities until a few years ago. My pups are eating Wellness Just for Puppy. The breeder was feeding them Purnina ProPlan One (not a puppy food - they are from the same breeder, different fur-moms). They switched over to the new food almost immediately. Even though I mixed in the new food for a slow switch, they picked out the pieces of Wellness puppy they wanted from the bowl. No upset tummy or loose stools. I recently picked up a bag of Wellness Small Breed Just For Puppy. The bites are about half the thickness of the regular puppy. They really love it. I have been stuffing the Small Breed Puppy in their Kongs and topping with some peanut butter. Takes them about 20-30 minutes to eat it. I will have to check out the Orijen Puppy. I like to make sure they eat something before I leave for work and when I come home. Might be something to put in the Kong other than biscuits. |
We did Orijen Puppy. The kibble was nice and small, he loved it. Now we use NOW. Again, the kibble is very small. |
Orijen Puppy I have two adult yorkies and one puppy. I have been feeding Orijen Puppy food to my Yorkies for the past few months. I started feeding my yorkies the raw food diet in January and wanted free feed kibble. When I searched for a high quality dry food without grain, Orijen was one of the top foods listed. My babies love it but they don't eat the dish empty as quickly as it sounds your Bella does. I would slowly make the transition to the new kibble making sure to only give her the required amount in 2-3 feeding per day. |
Orijen puppy is a Great food! I had Riley on it for a couple of months. Be careful not to overfeed or it can cause soft stool... because of the high protein levels they really don't need to eat a whole lot. Riley eats less than what the bag recommends.... and he Never seems to be Hungry afterward.... I switched him to ACANA, which is from the Same Company as Orijen, "Champion Pet Foods" and which has a little less protein leval and he Loves it just as much. If you Google Orijen White Paper you can read all about what they believe and it has a section about Protein. It is a Great read. I have been feeding Riley Primal Raw in the mornings and the ACANA kibble at night and he has been Thriving. People comment on how great he looks and how shiney his coat is, all the time. Good Luck! :) |
I have been interested in Orijen dog food. My little girl will only eat very small kibble. Do you know how large the Orijen adult kibble is? Also I read a review on another site that said the company that makes Orijen was sold to a large dog food company that makes low grade foods. Is that true? Has the quality changed or will it change in the future as this person said? |
No, Orijen was not sold to a lower-end company. Natura (EVO and Innova) was sold to Proctor & Gamble and they recently changed some ingredients around that I would not trust. Orijen/Acana (Champion Pet Foods) is a fantastic company! One of the best, if you ask me  I still feed Acana in rotation with TOTW. Orijen did cause him some runny stools, though, once they changed the ingredients a bit. |
Right now Riley is on a bag of the ACANA's new flavor "Ranchlands". The kibble is a perfect size... not too big... not too small. He is Loving it. I was soooo excited when I saw that the pet store I get his food from started carrying it. :) |
