Puppy biting & wee wee pad advice Hi everyone, I just picked up my shorkie, Bella, yesterday and she's adapting great!:animal36 I know puppies have a strong desire to chew, but Bella prefers my fingers and skin to toys. I quickly give a toy in place of my hands and place her in her pen if the biting becomes too aggressive, but does anyone have advice for dealing with nipping. She's 9 weeks old. Bella uses her wee wee pad well which is fantastic, but how often should I change it? They are expensive. Right now I change it after she goes 3 to 4 times. The package says after every wetting, but puppies go often. Thanks for your help. I love this forum and talking about our best friends.:aimeeyork |
Congrats on your new baby!! 9 weeks huh? Well she is a little young to have been taken away, so you're going to have to teach her the social aspect that a puppy usually learns when he or she is with their Momma and litter mates. But anywho, it's doable. The replacing with a toy is good, when Gizmo get's too nippy, I'll take my hand away say no bite and just kind or ignore him. He doesn't like when I turn away and got the concept pretty soon. I also will just say "be gentle" and he'll turn from gentle nibbles to licks. Alot of dog owners think that yelling NO BITE! and grabbing their dog's muzzle is effective and that's not the case. In fact, alot of times it kind of slows down if not reverse the process because the dog will become fearful of you. Anywho, one our YT member actually makes washable pee pads which sounds to mewill be a little more price efficient for you. Here's her website: Washable and reusable dog and puppy pee pads, belly bands, and diapers by T. Bumpkins & Co. Cathy does a wonderful job with all of her products. So, I hope I helped. Good luck! |
Welcome and congrats! Unfortunately, when a breeder places a pup at 9 wks, new mommy has to do the job of the pup's mother and teach bite inhibition. It can be done. I got my first yorkie young and walked in your shoes. I would say "no bite, get a toy" and then guide her over to get a toy to play w me. She really caught on and would start to go get a toy out of her basket and bring it to me to play. It will take a little while of constantly doing it w her (yorkies do well w repetition to learn things) but she will get it. It sounds like you are already off to a good start w this! :) |
I have never had any problems with biting.... I change Riley's peepee pads after every 2 - 3 piddles.... but it also depends on how Big the piddles are. Sometimes he can go once and it will be a Huuuuuge one.... I'll change that right out. Other times, he will piddle 2 - 3 times, and they will be size of dimes. I get the Clean Go Puppy Pads and get them from Amazon. I get 100 for about $29 + Free Shipping. Good Luck! :) |
I got Princess young, too, 9 1/2 weeks so she tried to nip, bite & chew us a lot. The vet suggested I completely ignore her when she does it, she suggested by standing up & possibly walking away. So I did that, saying "no bite" first & it really helped pretty quickly. As for pads, I keep mine in the bathroom now that she can usually be trusted & I flush any poop immediately when I'm home. As for peeing, I let her go a few times also depending on size, once there's not a good size spot for her to go she will pee beside it, so I probably change it every 3-4 times. |
Thanks so much for your suggestions!! I LOVE the website and will order some pee peds right away. I'll also check out amazon for back up and outtings.:) |
With two puppies I am going thru a lot of pee pads. After three weeks, I have gone thru at least two packs of 50. I usually change them after 4-5 pees depending on the size. Abby is about the size of a dime and Max is usually a half-dollar pee-er. I have four down together (down from five last week) to give them a good size area. I get the OUT! pads from either Wal-Mart or Amazon.com. I just picked up a package of 100 for $23 at Wal-Mart, the 50 count is $12.88 a pack. I think they are about a dollar cheaper at Amazon. And free shipping. I will say, not all batches are made equal. Some of the packages seem to be better quality than the others. Out of 4 packages, three were great, one the pads were a little bit smaller. |
