Looking for info from Florida Residents Hello All, long time no talk :) Hopefully with the summer holidays FINALLY here, I will be on here more frequently. I sure do miss my YT family. I am looking for help from FL members. My parents bought a house near Punta Gorda and Layla will be living there for 3-4 months of the year (December- March-ish). The longest we have ever stayed is 2-3 weeks so I am needing help with some questions. Layla will be on Interceptor for heart worm while she is there, not something we usually need in the winter months in Canada :) I am just looking for any other info I might need to know to keep her healthy while she is there. I will most likely not be there for the full 3-4 months as I will hopefully be teaching. Are there certain bugs that we need to watch out for? Plants that are harmful? Any additional info I can get would be great! |
Hi Marci. Good to see you on YT. :) I'm definitely not from Florida, but I assume she will need a really good fleas product and possibly a tick product too. You're strong being able to leave her for months! Two weeks away from Ellie and I get devastated. lol |

1 Attachment(s) We live in Central Florida, but I'm not sure of the difference in bugs and/or animals between our two areas. We watch out for the poisonous frogs, alligators, snakes, hawks, buzzards, racoons, possums, and armadillos. (We did have a bob cat at our other house about five miles away.) Both my girls have been affected by the frogs and Ally was almost taken away by a buzzard when she was a baby. My girls love to chase squirrels and lizards. The squirrels love to share their fleas and ticks, so don't set out a feeder to attract them. The other critters bring them too, but we've found them highly concentrated when people put out feeders for them. There is a lot of water here, whether it is the ocean, lake, or swimming pool. Please watch so Layla doesn't fall in and drown. Our babies tired quickly and may be unsure of how to get out. I have a fenced-in yard with a swimming pool and never leave my girls outside alone. Someone is always outside with them, watching, and playing. We hope you have fun here and if I think of anything else, I write back. There are a lot of Florida residents here, so I'm sure they'll add something too. |
We live in Palm Beach..and I do not allow mine out without a close watch...we have Bufo frogs, but mostly at night....and they are toxic. I prefer mine do not poke around the landscaping...so I use a stroller or stay out of the grass like most....best wishes Yes, I forgot..hawks...mine pretty much stay in screened areas..I have 2 wee ones... |
Thanks to you both. Layla is never out of our sight and never off leash so we can count out the hawks- now what do these frogs look like? She goes out for a late night pee and the grass you have down there is so thick and,... well odd to us Canadians- I am sure I wouldn't even see it... |
I am Canadian but spend 6 months of the year in the Florida Keys. My Bella was only 8 months old when I took her down. I have her on interceptor and advantage. I use it 12 months a year. I only let her outside when she is with me and always on a leash. The hawks are a problem where I am. I am constantly looking to the sky. There are some poisonous plants that you have to watch out for. There is a type of palm that produces little red berries and if they eat them they will go into kidney failure. Like I said I always leash her so I can monitor what she gets into. If you google poisonous plants in Florida you will see which ones they are and photos. Bella likes it in Florida. We take her every where with us. She loves to go out to the tiki bars and restaurants. They are so accepting of pets there. |
