Question Regarding New Addition So, as you all know, we'll be adding Ms. Harlie Dee to our family next week. I've been doing massive research online about introducing 2 pups before she arrives, but I cannot find a YT thread I saved (forever ago) about starting them off on the right foot. I know it involved taking the older pup out for a certain amount of time (I don't remember WHAT that magic number is) and letting the new pup roam the house, then you bring the older pup back in? I don't remember the specifics and that is why I saved the thread. :p Anyway, does anyone know what I'm talking about? Also ANY tips for introducing a new pup to our family are appreciated and welcome! Thanks very much in advance! :) |
Shameless bump for myself, ha ha. Harlie comes home on Saturday! :D |
I am sorry I am not of any help to you. But hopefully someone will see this and be able to answer your question. I have been wanting to add another to my family as well. The biggest issue for us has been socializing the one I already have before introducing another. I don't know if that is a concern for you or not. Has the pup you have now been around others? |

Also, we haven't really had many in our house. The few we did have didn't stay long and Rylie seemed scared of them  Granted they were all bigger pups/dogs (I'm talking Mastiffs here :p). I just want things to go as smoothly as possible and I can't for the life of me find that thread I subscribed to! It is starting to aggravate me :thumbdown That's what I get for being a YT addict... now I have too many threads to sort through. :p |
Good luck to you! Maybe some will come to give you advice. I have a thread about adding another but like I said it was mainly socialization. |
I am in need of the truth, i bought a male yorkie, akc, puppy, wanted to breed him to my female one time before i have her fixed, so i could have her baby, anyway this puppy is 3 lbs, was 6 mos old on the 28th of june, he has no testicales, i called the breeder she said some times it will take 8 to 9 mos when they r this tiny?????????????????, what do u think???????????? someone please help me, i pd 1000.00 for this dog |
I have 4 yorkies, they are close in age, Tessie is 2 1/2, Hobbes is 6 weeks younger, Calvin will be 2 in Sept. and Sassy will be 1 in August. The first 3 did great together, I just made sure I didn't give more attention to the new puppy. I never left them alone until I knew they were ok. The first 3 did great together. But when I brought Sassy home I was afraid they were going to hurt her, they were so aggressive towards her. I never left her with the other dogs. I think it was because she was a female. It took a while but now they get along good. Actually she thinks she is the boss. |

Are you sure you are supposed to take the older pup out and let the new one roam the house? I haven't heard of that and to me, it sounds intrusive to the older pup. But what the heck do i know? What I've been told and what worked for us is having the 2 dogs meet on neutral grounds, meaning not in the house. This way they can feel comfortable around each other without one feeling defensive or uncomfortable. When Max came into the house I made sure that we gave Cooper almost all of our attention. The key is to not let your current dog feel that he/she is not the alpha. You definitely don't want jealousy. |

I have heard your should let them meet on neutral territory like outside. Each time I brought a new one in it seemed to be winter or night time. I just brought the new one home and the others would sniff them and follow them around. I never had any problems but I never left them alone together until the new one was housebroken. I just made sure the others got plenty of attention. You also may want to give a new toy to your older one to distract her. I can imagine how excited you must be!! |
not going to breed now just want to know when do the males get them (tests) is it normal not to have them at 6 mos old |

I'm wondering where we could have them meet because Harlie won't be fully vaccinated? I would worry having her out somewhere and catching something. I get the premise though! Right, do everything for Rylie first! :D Good news is that she's my baby and I'm her favorite. I imagine it will be similar with my mum and Harlie. Quote:
The toy is a good idea. Luckily, I have a bunch of new toys stockpiled (I don't give her everything I buy all at once to keep things fresh). I will get one out when Harlie comes home. We are so excited!!!!! :D It is all the suspense of getting a pup all over again. |
P.S. Thank you for all the responses everyone! |
New dog personality trumps rules... I brought 4.5#, 16 month old Max home to my 9# 2 year old Marley. Marley is such a caretaker -- co-dependent really... and raced back and forth making sure everybody was still 'happy'. Max, who seemed very timid, who shinnied up my leg when put down outside, turned into the demon seed! He totally rules the house. Do you remember the crane moves in Karate kid? Max attacks Marley, twirling in the air; jabbing Marley with his little stub tail; pinning Marley to the ground; sending Marley (twice his size) to my lap or out the pet door to escape. Max can race the length of the house to grap a tiny treat being held out to Marley. He must always go out the door first; only wants the toy that Marley has; only wants the plate of food that Marley has... you get the idea. I don't think any thread or rules can completely prepare you for the reality of the meeting. Let them meet and evaluate each other, and then prepare your game plan. Having said that, I believe with enough love and supervised togetherness, any two dogs can learn to live together. |
Thanks so much for posting this thread.... getting April's (soon to be Harlie Dee's) brother Austen, I have the same interest. So far, I feel that my initial instincts are affirmed with: - Neutral meeting ground - Give equal attention - Allow Zoey (my two year old Yorkie) to get fed first, etc. (although not at different times - just before Austin) - Never leave them unattended until confirmed they are good together - And of course some of the regular puppy stuff (e.g., Nutrical, puppy food) And I love the idea of having a new toy set aside for Zoey, to aid in preoccupation. Of course, she already has more than she could ever need and Austen has a few already waiting for him... but shhhhhh, we will just keep that our secret ;) I can hear your excitement and I feel exactly the same.... only a few days left!! :happyboun :woof: :happyboun |

Do you think the car would be acceptable "neutral" territory? I could take Rylie with me to the airport to pick up my mum. I'm still learie of having Harlie outside before she has all her shots. I think our backyard would be relatively safe, but that's still Rylie's territory and wouldn't work. :( |

Of course, this is all new to me like it is to you - just my instinct. I saw that you too are in grad school - I hope it is going well :) OMGosh, I am beginning the hourly countdown versus weeks and days :D |

:) Thanks, it is going very well! I'm actually just ending my lunch break for my internship as I type, ha ha. I'm going for my B.S./MBA in Accounting. What are you going for? I know!!!! So excited! :D (I will of course not be able to read your reply until the end of the workday :p) |

Almost a month ago I added a4 months old yorkie baby to my pack. Mattie is 10 yrs old and Abbey is 7. So far not so good......Miley wants to play and they want her to get lost! They run and hide from her and group together away from her :( I hope this changes or Miley will just have to get a playmate her age.....ssshhhhh dont breathe a word within 5 miles of hubby!!!;) |

I think Harlie will be okay in that department because Rylie is still a pup herself! :) Any excuse to get another is always a good thing though! :p |
When my buddy got her third yorkie puppy, she brought her home in her travel kennel. She kept the baby in the travel kennel when she brought her in the house and let the other dogs come to her. After about 10-15 minutes she opened the door. I don't think any of her dogs have really established herself as the dominant one - they are just silly friendly dogs. That was about a year ago and they get along great. Good luck. |
Found that post I was talking about. I was right, it was by Mardelin. Quote:

P.S. Rylie and Harlie got along famously from day 2 on (day 1 was filled with over excitement and over exuberant playtime). So we didn't have any challenges. :) |
