Lucy is being spayed - post OP help? Hello fellow Yorkie lovers! Today my little girl is getting spayed. She will be spending the night and we will be picking her up tomorrow morning. Thankfully, I will be home with her until Tuesday. I have a few questions - 1. How long before she can be at home alone? 2. I don't want to get her an ecollar, is there anything else I can use to keep her from licking her wound? 3. Are there any special foods or drinks I can give her to help with the pain? A heating pad? I would appreciate any helpful advise. Thank you and happy Thursday! |
1. How long before she can be at home alone? I was home a couple days, then I went back to work. They really bounce back quite quickly and if she doesn't have access to climbing up on couches or anything, she'll be fine in a few days. 2. I don't want to get her an ecollar, is there anything else I can use to keep her from licking her wound? Rhianna never licked her wound, she had inside stitches. They sent her home with an ecollar and it was just horrible. I opted for a onesie instead, but didn't need it at all with her. 3. Are there any special foods or drinks I can give her to help with the pain? A heating pad? They will give you pain meds to take home. Rhianna was still pretty doped up and didn't seem in pain at all even the day after. The vet told us give them if she needed them, which she didn't. Just provide plenty of love and maybe even some turkey and/or chicken. :D You'll see how quickly they actually do bounce back. Just keep her from running, jumping off things, etc. |
Make sure they give you pain meds |
I used a onesie instead of the collar. It worked beautifully. Anesthesia can cause some intestinal disturbances. Small, frequent meals are usually more easily tolerated. I stuck with shredded boiled chicken and rice for the first two days just to make it more easily digestible. Pain seems to be a bigger problem on day 2 and 3 as the anesthesia wears off. Make sure you have pain meds on hand for her. How long before she's at home: Depends on the practice of your vet. Some keep them overnight, others let them go home the same day. I took mine home the same day because there wasn't going to be anyone at the vet's office watching them overnight and I felt she was safer at home with me than in a crate there alone. |
Thank you so much for all of this advice... How can she go potty with a onsie on? Also, is it safe to give her rice and chicken if she only ever eats dog food?? |
You can unsnap the onesie when she needs to go. Alternatively, you can cut out a hole in the tush, but then you run the risk of her peeing on the onesie. If she has a favorite dog food, then by all means go ahead and feed it to her. Chicken is just an easily digestible protein that many Yorkies like to eat. As long as your little girl hasn't had any food allergies to chicken or rice in the past it's safe. In fact, if your little girl is on commercially prepared dog food, it's most likely that these are two of the main ingredients in her food already. |
Maggie was hurting just a bit the night of her spay and we were able to give some pain meds. She was still quiet the next morning but didn't seem to be in any pain. I would make sure to ask the vet if and when (time) you can give more pain meds if needed. Just make sure that she can be quiet and rest for a couple of days. You will want to keep her from jumping and running around like a terror for about a week to 10 days. Also, if you haven't, you may want to bathe her before as you should not do so until at least 10 days. Yes, a onsize will do in a bind. lol, Maggie peed right thru hers-I tried to get to her but she was quicker than I. lol I offer an alternative to the plastic e-collars, they are soft and will conform to the dog. Check out the link in my signature. Hope all goes well with Lucy's spay. |
Praying everything goes well with Lucy's spay. My Sassy was spayed 2 weeks ago and you would think nothing happened. She also had inside stitches, she only took pain meds twice. she laid around for 2-3 days but after that she was back to terrierizing the other 3 dogs. she never licked her belly. |

You can't see the stitches on the outside and the scar isn't as bad. This way she can't pull the stitches out. |
1 Attachment(s) Kiki was just spayed and I attached a picture of her that was taken last night. She did great and by morning you wouldnt of known she just had surgery. I am trying to get her to relax and she cant have play time with her lasso apso brother for a whole week as to Dr. instructions. If you look closely, you can see her boo boo on her little belly and its the inside stiches so they desolve. She is precious! What did you feed her after surgery?? How do you keep her from jumping?? Lucy is a jumper. |
ZoE was spayed yesterday. She couldn't eat until after 7pm the day of her spay, due to anesthesia, then I fed her the Blue Buffalo kibble she normally eats and a little boiled chicken a few hours later. I put a baby onesie on her to keep her from licking her stitches. She has external sutures that will be taken out in 10 days. She has a very neat small incision. At my vet's recommendation, I bought extra pain meds (just in case) because we are going into a holiday weekend & they will be closed. ZoE's stroller has been a great place for her to rest, while still being part of the household activities. She's recovering well and is doing much better today. I hope everything goes well for your baby & she has a quick recovery too :) |
