Is my yorkie preggers? 4 Attachment(s) I just rescued a female yorkie from my county's animal shelter 8 days ago. She and a male yorkie (they were picked up together) shared a cage. I rescued her and someone else got the boy. I had to shave her because she was so matted and I noticed her nipples and her privates looked large. I have never had a toy breed so I don't know if this is just how they are proportioned. I have to get her spayed within 30 days but her appt isn't until mid July with HSMO. I don't have any extra cash to get a x-ray or ultrasound. Can you look and tell if she is pregnant or will I have to wait until her appt? Here are some pics of her anatomy. Thanks |

hard to say. i would just check with the vet. she could have had pups in the past that left her with larger nipples and her vulva could be from being in heat or being bred many times leaving it more swollen than you would normally see. i would just go with the vet and see one ASAP so you know what you are dealing with right away. good luck and bless you for rescuing her!! |

Thanks RachaelandSadie for the fast response. |

I would take her back to the shelter and ask if their vet can have a look at her, I can't believe they adopted out an unaltered dog that had been sharing a cage with an unaltered male. |

Thanks for replying ArmaniMan, Here's the deal here. I adopted her from my municipality's animal shelter. These are the animals that were picked up on the streets in Florissant, MO or the owners have given up. If the owners have not picked up their pets within 7 days they can be adopted out. This shelter I don't believe does any vetting. If the animals have not been adopted out within 30 days, they are sent to the St. Louis County shelter where it would be determined if they are still adoptable or will be euthanized. The animals adopted from the Florissant shelter are free but you have to get them fixed within 30 days. I don't want to take her back because she is a really sweet dog. |

Contact them with your thoughts. See if they have a vet they work with. You want to be a good owner and spay her but not kill babies or be responsible for potential puppies either. See what they say. |

My she is a cutie. I would call and vet and explain you situation. I don't honestly think you're going to get anywhere with the shelter if that is their policy (which is a really weird policy I must say). But definately have a vet take a look at her, even if you aren't opting for the ultrasound. I'm sure they could shed a little bit more light, especially if they're given a little bit more background on the situation. |

She certainly looks like she could be pregnant. She needs to go to a vet asap! You really need to know what you are dealing with! Are you prepared for this if she is pregnant? Do you know anything about whelping? Can you afford to take her to a vet if she needs a c section? If not, I suggest that you reach out to the shelter and/or a rescue and see if perhaps they can help you. Maybe you could arrange something where you could keep her after the puppies are weaned. I don't know...but you definitely need to find out if she is pregnant. If you cannot afford an xray...I fear you are really dealing with something that could really be a mess for you. I cannot believe the shelter did this...surely they examine these pups??? I do understand the spay/neuter policy as that is commonly done across the country...but my goodness to adopt a pup like that and not know? |

Well, she has at least been in heat. How old is she? Was the male dog neutered during the time they were together? Sounds like a very bad shelter to be adopting out animals that have not even been vet checked. If you can't afford to take her to the vet to find out then your just going to have to wait and see. She may be too far along by the time your spay appointment comes around. What will you do then? Are you prepared to deliver and care for puppies? Do you have any history on her? Was she surrendered or a stray? Could they contact the former owner and ask about the situation? If she has been bred before or when she was in heat last? You need information and you need it real soon. |

You have no way of knowing if the father is the male yorkie who shared the cage with her, what if she got pregnant on the streets by a really big dog, she could be in danger. Please talk to a vet about spaying immediately. The economy is bad, and we have an abundance of dogs who need homes, don’t add to the problem, and bless you for giving her a home, she’s a doll! |

Thanks to everyone for the replies. The animal shelter is run by the Florissant Health Department. They have no information on her. They checked to see if she was micro chipped but her paperwork said negative. She is scheduled to be spayed and receive her vaccination and rabies shots because I don't know if she has been vaccinated. I was curious about the pregnancy issue because I was looking up yorkie info online and started seeing pregnant yorkie bellies and they looked like hers. If she is pregnant, I have family members that would care for the pups when they are old enough. I'm assuming the boy yorkie was her mate because the person who pick him was standing next to me when I had her in my arms and it was like she was crying for him and trying to get to him. They were in that cage together for 7 days because I got her on that 7th day. I will call some vets in the morning to see if they can take a look at her. I love this dog already. She loves to be picked up and held like a baby, not sure if this is bad to do, but she just lays there as I stroke her. I named her Lady and she already answers to it. |

Not bad at all, but make sure you know what to do if she is pregnant! And, have a plan if she needs emergency vet care. Good luck. |
|
Sorry, I don't know anything about pregnant dogs, just wanted to say thank you for adopting her. I got mine from a pound too, he is a great dog. Makes me nuts that people keep cranking out more puppies when there are so many without a home. But they are doing it to "better the breed", yeah whatever. But the suggestion about contacting a YT rescue is a good one if she is pregnant. There may be all sorts of nasty surprises and unforeseen expenses if she is pregnant. Best of luck to you both. |

Sounds really sad that the two dogs had to be adopted away from each other. I am appalled that that shelter had no information about them. Usually any shelter will at least list their animals as stray or surrendered. What is wrong with these people? This little dog has just gone through quite a bit of trauma emotionally and physically. She does need to be seen by a vet and if she is pregnant you need to start reading up on delivering puppies. In the event there is a problem during the delivery you need to have an emergency vet that is available 24/7 near by. |

How long ago was she with the male? |
|
Thanks to all for your suggestions. I called a vet and explained what was going on and they said to monitor her. Well, I have had her for 20 days now and I feel and see them moving in her belly. I have read just about everything online about pregnant yorkies and have come across 1 site saying fetal movement they are 7 weeks along and another saying 8 weeks. Is this just an approximation or is there a definitive answer. She will be sleeping in my room from now until the pups are 3 weeks. I saw a video on youtube of a maltese giving birth and the breeder put iodine on the puppies umbilical cord. Is this something I need to do or was that something extra on her part? Lastly, Lady was scheduled to be spayed on July 20. How long will I have to wait for her to get the surgery? Thanks again everyone. |

I just saw your thread.. In the initial pictures your new girl looked liked she was pregnant to me. My brothers Chi is ready to give birth any day. This is a scary situation to be in. Has your yorkie been to a vet? I really hope all go well for her and you. |

It is 8 weeks that you feel the pups move around as they are close to being born. You can also hear their heartbeats now as well. The iodine isn't necessary but you should cut the cord yourself as you don't want the mom to chew it too short or rip it out. Here is a good site to look at that has tons of information on whelping. Dog Breeding and Canine Reproduction by Debbie Jensen. Dog Breeding and Whelping guide for dog breeders. Have you taken her in for an x-ray? If not I would do so as it will give you an idea of how many pups and if they are possibly too big for her. I hope you have someone there that can help you and that you are ready for this. A lot can happen with a whelp, it is a big responsibility. She should be spayed after her pups are weaned which is around 8 weeks old. Good luck, I hope all goes well. |

I don't know if she's pregnant: take her to the vet... oh I see you updated. Don't call, go to the vets, please. Anyways what vet just advises over the phone & doesn't want to do an exam? The vet needs to do an exam and will readily advise you on all this and so much more that is needed for a pregnant dog; let alone the delivery of pups of unknown size.... What shelter was it again because all those in your area I see require spay/neuter before release...or so says the first 9 that show up via Google search...? |
|
@ concretegurl...It's the Florissant Animal Shelter not the St. Louis County Shelter or a rescue shelter. The adoption of the animals are free but the person adopting is required to get them spayed or neutered within 30 days or you will have to return the pet and possibly pay a fine for non-compliance. |

Please update us. The reason some of us are urging you to take her to a Vet is because we are worried. (We do not know what your financial situation, but ) Breeding a dog can be expensive and many things can go wrong. I am sure you were not interested in breeding this adorable little girl. You probably just wanted a pet you could love and share your life with. I wish there were more people like you that would open their heart and home to a homeless animal. We will try to give you good advice and support. |

Mom and babies are adorable!! Congratulations!!!! |

Wow- you got more than you bargained for when you went to the animal shelter. Glad that mother and babies are healthy. Please make sure that when you find them their forever homes that it's on a spay/neuter contract. |
|
God Bless you for giving her a loving home. Such sweet babies, what a surprise for you. Happy to hear they are doing well. Have they been to the vet and can you tell if they are Yorkies? |
|
I have just read this thread and am grateful for a happy ending. Lady looks peaceful and the pups look great. Did you and Lady do this alone? You've done a wonderful job rescuing this girl and saving her babies. I do agree with Rhetts moma to make certain these babies are spayed and neutered. Good luck to all of you. Keep us updated please. |
