Just Plain Amazed Hi everyone! I am new to YT, and also new to yorkies. We just got Toby from a previous owner who could no longer take care of him. Her friends got him for her as a gift after her husband passed away. She spoiled him with tons of toys, but just wasn't able to give him the attention he needed. Since we've had him, he has been nothing but wonderful! I will be honest with you, I was a little reluctant in getting a Yorkie because I've just heard horror stories about potty training, being yappy, etc and I didn't know if I was ready for all that. I had just lost my previous dog of 18 years, and wasn't looking for another dog. (RIP Max) Having had dogs previously (but hadn't had a new one in 18 years), I had trained my previous dogs myself, not taking them to obedience class or anything like that. My mom and I had taken our first dog to a class, but I was not impressed with how they taught. I am a firm believer in praise over treats. From experience, when you give a dog a treat for doing something you want him to do, he expects that treat every time, if he doesn't get one, he doesn't do what you would like him to do. I taught Toby how to sit in like 15 mins! He is also 99% housebroken as well. He is only 5 months old. He is just extremely smart! I love it! Is this typical for Yorkies? |
Welcome! I find that people often underestimate Yorkies in every way! They can be all terrier, very athletic, very smart! I have trained Jackson a lot by myself. We share a really strong bond. I use treats and don't see anything wrong with it, it's worked very great for us. He's not very praise motivated but every dog is different. I do not give him a treat after every trick... they are phased out. He will do 20 tricks for just one little treat if I ask him to. Welcome to YT and congrats on Toby! He sounds like a gem :) |
Omg, hes just amazing!! |

Welcome and congratulations on getting Toby. He sounds like a smart little guy. Wow Jackson is amazing not to mention adorable. You did a great job working with him. |
Welcome to YorkieTalk and congratulations on the new addition your family. Toby sounds like a very good boy. Looking forward to pictures. :) |
Yup, I got to admit. Yorkies are pretty smart and just amazing dogs!! I used to think maltese are great...well, not anymore...I am officially a yorkie girl! ;) |
I've had a sheltie, who I thought was super smart and he was, but Jack is just as smart. Like the OP said, they can be all terrier or can be the most lovable, loyal pups around. Congrats on your new puppy! Sounds like things are off to a great start for you. |
Hi and Welcome to YT! Is sounds like you picked a keeper! Some may catch on quicker than others, but I think they're all fairly smart... some are too smart!:D |
Zoe turned me into a Yorkie "convert" within a very short time! I used to think I'd always have a Cavalier; now I know I will always have a yorkie...hopefully it will be Zoe for MANY years to come! |
I think Yorkies can be very individual in the way they act. A lot depends on the breeding. They should be very smart but some are also a bit head strong because of the terrier in them. Mostly I think it depends on how smart the owner is. Not all dogs train well the same way. I have trained with treats but find once the behavior is learned the dog will continue to do it regardless. My dog has me trained very well. |
wow,Jackson is sooo clever and as cute as a button :) |
