Do you know your city's law about dogs in hot cars? I realize we've had similar posts about this...but since that dog died recently in a car (was it in CA?), I thought it may be good to discuss this again. Here in AZ, if there is an animal in a hot car - even if the windows are cracked - we can call 911 and the police will come. They'll park their patrol car behind the offender's car and wait for the person. If the dog is in bad distress, they'll break a window. I have called 911 several times for this here in Phoenix, and they've come within 5-10 minutes. When you call, be sure you can give the address - or the cross streets. Do you know your law? :) |
There was a big ruckus at our local Walmart last summer when a woman (A) smashed the window out of another woman's (B) car, because she saw a dog panting away in the back of the vehicle on a hot sunny day. The cops were called because the two women were fighting in the parking lot. It turned out woman B had set her AC to on before she got out of her car & locked the doors. Then she used her remote start to restart the locked car with the air running for her dog, before entering the store. Woman A didn't realize the car was running, saw the panting dog and smashed out the car window. Woman B said her dog was extremely anxious and would pant just because she was gone & the dog was alone. Police wrote a ticket for malicious destruction of personal property to woman A. Case settled when woman A paid for repairs to woman B's vehicle, along with car rental during the repair time. |
Where would you find this information? Everything I have found is about abuse or neglect but not specific to leaving one in a car. |

I'm happy that our county posts signs in many parking lots about not leaving dogs in cars. |
In calif it is, you can be fined or jail time, if the animal is hurt you can get a 500$ fine and 6 months in jail. It also goes for cold, no water, food. I saw a a little maltese stuck in a car at the Target parking lot, it was like 90 this day. She had the windows cracked not even an inch!! I called 911 and the Animal Control. They came within 10 mins, I knew I would freak out if I saw the owner so I left once they got there! People honestly need to think, it is not ok!!!! |

LovesP - here in Phoenix, people can be fined and/or have to go to court too, depending on severity, I believe. |
My Law: If I see your dog in a car and he's in distress, you will be the next one in distress! |

in Montana, they call animal control and they will break the window and remove the animal and charge the person |

I know the city ordinance for the city I work in. Just a couple of weeks a woman was arrested when she left her three month old puppy in her car while she got a massage. A massage, really? She was arrested and indicted but she hasn't yet gone to court. I'm hoping I can find out her court date. Her punishment should be harsh, it has been heating up to 100 degrees plus the last few weeks. The last I heard the puppy was still in the custody of animal services. |
Not sure what our law is in Georgia but I know we have strict animal cruelty laws. I am going to check on this because I have seen it several times. |
Why would someone leave a dog in a hot car!?!? I mean, if a person wouldn't be comfortable sitting there with the A/C off, a dog who can't sweat wouldn't want to either. The only time I leave my dog in the car (if I absolutely have to) is if the car is in the shade and if it's no higher than 70 degrees out and only for 10 minutes at the most. |
Leaving a dog or child in a car is just plain wrong. Even if it isn't hot outside,it takes less than 6 seconds for someone to break in and steal you baby. It has happened here in TX several times. |
I like the stance that Burleson, TX has taken. No animal can be left in a parked car for any reason no matter what the weather is outside. |
