Am I overly protective? Whenever I take Gizmo for walkies, I always come home and wash his paws. I do this also before bed. People think I'm werid, but I don't know what people have put in their yards that gets dragged onto the side walks. I know alot of times they put the little warning things on the lawn if they fertilized, but I don't want to take any chances. Am I like one of those parents that is constantly disinfecting their kids? I've seen a dog die from simply drinking water off the street that had some fertilizer in it, and I don't want that to be Gizzy. Also,I thought about those little bootie things, but I know Giz would have no part in that. I know, I'm nuts. |
I think a lot of Yorkie owners do that. Perfectly fine if that's what you are most comfortable with. I don't wash paws unless I'm suspicious that she stepped in something weird. |
Well... It only takes one time to make a tragedy. Maybe a tad overprotective, but there's no harm in cleaning his paws so why not? |
i dont think thats over protective if it makes u feel better i only let momo drink bottled water because our water comes from a well. i think its great to take extra care of ur baby. |
It's all what each person is comfortable with. I personally don't wash paws after being outside, unless he's muddy or I *know* he stepped in something he shouldn't. But I also think people way over disinfect everything and we need a little germs in our life! ;) |
I don't wash Poppy's paws after every walk but I don't think your being over protective, just a careful momma. I'm always being told I baby Poppy too much and that I should let her be, but I can't help being protective over her because she is MY baby. :) |
Depending where we have been or if I feel he stepped in something. Winter salt can be bad. I set up a small tub before we go. When we come back he stands in it while I wash his feet then dry them |

And since our parvo adventure, I've been extra cautious with Allie if she went anywhere. I wouldnt let her go potty on the grass at our hotel last week, and I wouldn't let anyone pet her. I kept her in her stroller if she wasn't in my arms or in our hotel room. |
hmm....I thought it was normal??? Cuz I do it too!! Well, we buy baby wipes and wipe their paws every time they go outside and come home. Sometimes washing is needed because Carmel tends to get dirty all the time! |
I do the same, I don't walk on my floors with shoes so why would I want the dogs to dirty the carpet and furniture? |
washing doggies paws off after a walk seems reasonable. You know where you live and what can be dangerous to a dog. I think using per caution is a good thing. Dogs will lick their paws clean so it seems logical to want to protect them. I have done it before , but that was when Suzi had muddy feet. Their little paws can feel like sand paper. Dry and cracked. I think it is ok. But not a necassary thing to do every time. I worry about the heat more then dirty paws. |
I don't wash his feet everytime we go out, but each evening before we go to bed Gizmo gets wiped down with baby wipes and then he is place on his pillow for his nightly brushing before we get into bed. We have been doing this since I got him at 6 weeks old. Cynthia |
I do not even allow my Yorkies to walk on the ground...they go in the stroller or I carry them...I know they are dogs, but in south Florida we have too many icky thinks at ground level..and I hate them in dirt...grass is not much better. PS...I certainly would not walk on the sidewalk barefooted.. |
An inch of water in the sink with a tiny drop of shampoo works wonders for Kimbo's stinky feet and my peace of mind. |
I will occassionally wipe Riley's feet down with some oatmeal wipes i got at PetSmart, but very rarely..... |
Not a bad idea. |
Shoot we do this all the time! After a walk we wipe Cooper's feet with baby wipes and the wipes usually turn black! Just shows what they can pick up - and I don't want it in my bed ! Just have to be careful you don't dry their paws out too much. |
Phew! Glad I'm not the only weirdo!;) |
Phaha defiantly not a weirdo! WE have this towel that always sits on the case of water right by the door to go inside. Every time Coco goes outside we wipe them off. Except on the driveway because it gets power washed and it's pretty clean. But when she goes in the yard, and out and about we wipe them down with a towel and if they are dirty we also use the Pet Head shampoo wipes:) |
I think with these little animals you have to be very protective. I am concerned about my babies feet also, not because of what she walks in but because the pavement is getting so hot. I can only walk her in the early morning or later in the evening. I am thinking of getting her some sort of light weight bootie to wear that will protect her feet from the heat. |
If Mina has only been in her own backyard then I dont was feet. But if we go anywhere, especially if there has been traveling in the trailer involved. Then her feet get washed. Puppies lick their feet so either I clean them or she is going to and I dont want her to pick something up on her feet and then ingest it when she licks her feet. |
I don't think you're being overprotective at all. I think I'd consider the same if Princess went out often or didn't have to walk (run!) 3 flights of carpet to come in. That helps keep all of our feet cleaner. And besides, I think we all have something special we do for each particular yorkie to make our lives & theirs easier. |
There is No Right or Wrong I say, whatever makes you feel your furbabies are safe and well cared for is A-okay! All of us have different obsessions with these little cuties. It's just great that we have a place where we can share them and not feel embarrassed. Keep those feet squeaky clean, it certainly couldn't hurt!:) |
