Looking for litter mates. I purchased Keno in December 2010. I am looking for litter mates to see if they are large also. I paid $800.00 and saw both parents, or so I was told. Keno is 9 months old and is 15 inches tall and his weight is 11 lbs. Parents were 6 and 7 lbs. I purchased him from a lady in Pt. Charlotte FL. A back yard breeder, I am sure he will grow bigger as he matures. Don't get me wrong, I love him dearly and he stays with me. I still am disappointed that he is so large. I wanted a 6 to 7 lbs dog. |
Same thing happened with mine...I wanted a 6-7 pound one, he's now 10 pounds at 9 months old (I also got him in December 2010, but not in Florida). There are some benefits to his size--he's more sturdy, and I don't have to worry about him getting taken by hawks. But I wanted one small enough to carry in a purse or with one hand. It takes 2 hands to carry mine, so I can't take him to as many places. I'll know better for the next Yorkie I get. |
Well you can never tell by the parents, I got my Hobbes, Calvin and Sassy from the same breeder. They have the same parents but different litters. om and Dad were 7-8 lbs, I saw them. Hobbes is 18 lbs, Calvin is 11 lbs and Sassy is 6 1/2 lbs. Hobbes has a sister from his litter that only weighs 4 lbs, they didn't expect her to live. Sassy has brothers that weigh 8-9 lbs. |
Just because there parents where a certain size doesn't mean that the puppies are going to be a certain size also a bigger yorkie doesn't necessarily mean it was badly breed. I have a 16 pound yorkie and I absolutely love that shes bigger it works so great for me I would take all the bigger yorkies if I had the room :D |
I am babysitting a yorkie for a friend. He is 15 years old, still plays witht he younger dogs and weighs.......20 pounds. He is a porker. I told her she had a porkie not a yorkie.... He is so sweet and much more healthy than the female that my friend had. So, big is not always bad, not when it comes to a yorkie anyway.:) You truly can't always tell the weight and size by the parents. My son had a giant schnauzer. Both parents were HUGE 110+ pounds and super tall. His on the other hand weighed about 70 pounds and was not tall at all. Not much bigger than a standard. |
Unless someone really knows their lines, I think the only way to get a dog the size you want is to buy an older one. My two Sassy(7lbs) and Sydney(4lbs.) have produced puppies from just 3lbs to 12 lbs. in the same litter. It happens all the time, I get upset when I see people promising that the puppy you buy from them will only get to a certain size, I was promised my dog would only get to be around 6lbs. and today she weighs 13. It is disappointing to expect a smaller dog and of course you love your dog, but were hoping it to stay smaller, but glad to hear you love your dog regardless of him turning out bigger than expected.:) |
