My Mother Stole My DOG Hi everybody I'm new here and just thought I would introduce myself! I got my baby Charlotte two years ago as a Christmas Gift. I went away to College and since I was- am a homebody I was lonely sad and depressed. She has been my best friend- companion and she made being away so much more bearable. Fast forward two years later and I have moved back home after graduation for a FANTASTIC job and to assist with the care of my grandmother, she is 94 and has severe Alzheimer :(. any way my MOTHER has stolen my cuddle buddy. They get up every morning and go walking. They cuddle on the couch and she even follows my mom around the house now. My mother stole my best friend!! I still get the excited greeting at the door but that's only if we don't come in at the same time. Never thought Id be jealous of my moms attention from my dog. Needless to say I'm getting a new puppy once I get completely settled in probably in November- January. Anybody else experience this? It's kind of funny but it hurt my feelings. My mom said that its normal for children to favor their grandparents:rolleyes: LOL. |
I think that's fairly common where a Yorkie will sort of attach itself to one family member or another, sometimes not the person you want it to be attached to! I've heard lots of stories around here where the dog favors hubby or the wife. But I think with time, she can learn to show affection to everyone in the house equally. Just pick some activities that you alone do with her. Maybe an evening walk. Or some play time in the yard. Be consistent, so it's something she looks forward to. Feeding is another thing. Make sure your Mom isn't the only one doing the feeding. You don't have to take over ALL the things your Mom does, just mix it up so the dog knows it's really on both of you. I think that since you had a previous close relationship with the dog, it will remember pretty quickly that you're fun to snuggle with too. Good luck! |
Hahaha............my little Yorkie loves my mom also!!!! My mom has always taken care of my two boys as they were growing up so she was at my house constantly. My boys are now 24 and 21 and don't live at home anymore. My mom STILL comes to my house at least 3 days a week to see my dogs!!!!!!! :p I have two big dogs outside and two little ones inside. They ALL love my mom. She has a little poodle that my sister and I got her so she brings the poodle with her when she comes. Needless to say, my two little inside babies along with her little one are all competing for her affection! I think overall my little yorkie favors me, but my Chihuahua FOR SURE favors my mom!!!! |
My little Gracie has been my little shadow since I brought her home. My daughter moved back home a couple of months ago and Gracie just loves her. She gets all excited when my daughter comes home and hangs out with her for a while. She even goes in her room with her and sits on the bed with her and plays under the covers. I thought at first I was losing her but Gracie was enjoying herself so I let it go. Well, now that the novelty has worn off I find Gracie still likes to play with my daughter and hang out with her some but she always ends up with me. DD is always going some where. I think Gracie realized that I am the one who feeds her and is here for her. DD is fun but not reliable to be there to meet all her needs for companionship and such. It sounds like you are still pretty young and I'm sure you are active with work and other activities. It may be your little one is enjoying the extra attention and TIME she is getting from your mom. Before you get another dog you might consider the amount of time that little dog will spend at home ALONE while you are at work and when you have to go out after work. Those are a lot of empty lonely hours for a little dog that just wants to be with someone who loves him/her. |
My little guy Memphis loves my mom. They live out of town and stay with us one night a week in the winter. When they arrive, it's like we don't even exist anymore. He follows her around, will only eat downstairs with her and their dogs (border collies), always wants to be on her lap. He's such a grandma's boy. Fast forward to summer, our lake property is beside my parents home. From the time we arrive all he wants to do is go over to Grandma's house. At least I don't have to worry about him when we go away. Staying with Grandma is his favorite thing to do. |
Yes! My husband bought me a beautiful little girl Yorkie( Tessie) that I have always wanted for a surprise Mothers Day gift 2 years ago. I was so excited and in love with her. Well he is retired and would rock her when she was a baby cause I had to go to bed to go to work. Well now she is daddy's girl and just tolerates me. Fortunately I was able to talk my husband into 2 boys and now my sweet little Sassy Baby that loves her Mama. |
My mom watches my yorkies during the day when I work, we call it grammy daycare, she also watches them when I go out of town, they Love her like crazy, lol! It makes me happy though because I know it means she takes good care of them. |
Sounds like a loving gramma has moved in on your baby! ha! My little Jilly and my mom had one of those special bonds, too. It's natural for a dog to bond with the person they spend a lot of time with, I think. We do get a little jealous when our babies bond closely with others, though, don't we? |

The same thing happened with Coco and I. She was extremely attactched to my mom even though Coco was MY dog, until she got attached my my mom:) Recently though Coco has loved me and only me. My mom will come into my room while im on my laptop(usually YT) and Coco sits cured up to my side. She'l walk in and Coco will give her that "What the heck are you doing in here?" look :D |
I've tried the afternoon walk she just loves my mom. My mom says it's because she is warm and I'm usually cold which could very well be the case. My mom NEVER feeds her which in my case makes it worse. The only time she wants me is when she doesnt feel good (when she got her shots a few weeks ago she was a bit lethargic). I'm glad that this isn't just an isolated phenomenon makes me feel much better and not so alone hahahaha |
Just consider yourself very fortunate that your baby has both of you to love and to love her back :). She definitely loves you, but she is in the process of building another special, different bond with your Mom. She sounds like an absolute sweetheart - count your blessings :p:p! |
