Anyone use Sentinel? I have an appointment this afternoon for Gizmo to get checked for heartworms before we put him on sentinel. Anyone use it? Pros? Cons? I dont like the idea of giving Gizmo medication every month but i guess its better than the alternative? We live in SoCal and there aren't very many cases of heartworms here since we dont have many mosquitos. I wonder if its better to just leave him alone and cross that bridge if it comes to it? |
I use Sentinel for Lulu. However, we are in an area where heartworms are a problem. Lulu hasn't had any adverse reactions to the Sentinel and I have been quite happy with it. I had her tested at 1 year for heartworms and she was negative so it's done it's job so far. |
cummins I live in Illinois and have been very happy with it |
ZoE's first dose of heartworms meds was Sentinel...a vet freebie....then I changed to Interceptor, which has the exact same medicine for heartworm, just lacks the flea protection. I prefer to use a separate flea protection. My vet's highest recommended heartworm meds are both Sentinel & Interceptor. I keep ZoE on it year round because we travel alot. |
All 3 of mine take Sentinel monthy all year long. I have never had a problem or any reactions. Also I have never had a flea problem at all either. |
I am using Advantage multi for fleas and heartworms but am going to start using the Sentinel tablets that work the same way . I hate putting the liquid on their shoulders. |
Rosie has used it for 3 1/2 years now. We have never had any problems at all! :) |
All mine are on Sentinal as well |
We have never had an issue with it in New York either... |
I have the boys on Interceptor, but I'm interested in the Sentinel. Would it be OK to give them the Sentinel next month when they're due for the heartworm meds, or do I need to wait a little bit so there is not so much of a chance of a reaction? |
I use either Interceptor and Sentinel. You can switch to Sentinel and just start it a month after the last Interceptor dose. |
I've given Sentinel on a monthly basis to 5 different dogs (4 Yorkies and 1 Maltese, so all small breed) going back many, many years, and I have never seen a reaction of any kind, even when they were small puppies. I just stick it in a little peanut butter, they line right up to get it, they love it. |
I have given Macy Sentinel for a year and a half. Not adverse reaction, no heartworms or fleas. She loves it stuck in the middle of peanut butter or a piece of cheese. |
Gizmo's heartworm test was negative yesterday at the vet! Thank goodness since i have never given him anything for heartworms before. Just a flea medication once when we got him. I will start him on Sentinel tonight! Just makes me nervous giving him medication if he doesn't need it. Here in SoCal there arent many cases of heartworms but i guess rather safe than sorry? |
That's really at the discretion of your vet. If I lived in CA, there is no question for me. I'd give it. Heartworm treatment is dangerous and hard on the dog. |
