Why hasn't anyone invented this yet?! As of today I know of 2 people who have lost their dogs within 3 months. Both dogs have tags, but both didn't have them on, since they are primarily inside dogs and only wear the tags when they go for walks or on a trip. In both instances the dogs got out when someone opened a door and they darted out. I know microchipping is fantastic & Gabby will be getting her chip soon. But why not take it a step farther than just being able to locate the dogs owner when the chip is scanned? Since we can have ONSTAR installed in our cars to locate them when they get stolen, shouldn't we be able to do this with our pets? I know it would take a lot of work to make sure the device was safe for our pets, but in the end there would be a lot less worry. I know this is probably a pretty controversial topic, but seems to me like it could be a good idea. |
You would think there would be something like that available in this day & age. They can make the tiniest things do the biggest things. I would personally require a ton of research proving it to be safe & once it was I think I would get it, even at a ridiculous price. |

Powering the signal on a tracking device and/or replacing the powering unit on internal devices would seem to be an issue. That's why microchips are passive. |
They do make some tracking devices for pets but they are external and can be easily removed by thieves. Here's to hoping someone will invent one inside of a microchip! |
That is defiantly a good idea. Coco has gotten off her collar a few times because I hooked it on the wrong one and the tag slips off so if she escaped she wouldn't have her tag on:( That would be a pretty neat idea:D |

But if just lost a locator device in a collar would be great! When walking my "pack" several times I have seen people looking for a lost dog, like the op said... ran out when door opened. We found a shih tzu a while back.. no chip no collar. Beautiful dog. A friend took him, but I often think of the owner. I now keep tags on my little ones. |
Good News! The dog that was lost yesterday has been found & is now home safe & sound, even without her tags! |

Good news.. my gripe is I wish it would be law that a vet should check for a microchip if he/she does not know you, and also even tho a vet might know you it should be a must when you bring in a new puppy or dog... I do not wear collars on my yorkies. Only have microchip.. When we travel they have a harness on. But not daily. |

Trixie has bolted from the house once or twice so she now wears her collar with tag on it 24/7......and we are in the process of installing gates so she cannot get to the front door again. |
So far, all the ones I've seen are external and require a largish (for small dogs) battery that has to be kept recharged. There's talk of small GPS chips like the ones used in cellphones being implanted, but I don't think anyone's marketed it yet for dogs. I'd do that in a heartbeat. |
There probably are GPS chips for dogs, horses, etc, but the cost would be prohibitive. You would need more than just the chip you have to have a tracking center or own the equipment to track. My dogs take their tags off to swim and bathe,,that is it. I have spent alot of time and energy trying to return dogs from my neighborhood that arrived at my front door without tags or even a collar. When I do find the owner, they can have their animal back AFTER I chew them out for about 20min. Every owner that I have done this to had tagged their dog and fixed their fence. |
