Puppy with Kennel Cough, worried Bought my Yorkie Texas, about two months ago, he is almost 4 months old. He has this cough that will not go away. I have taken him to the vet 3 times and they seem to think its no big deal. They have given me medication twice for it and he still has this hacking cough in the morning and if he runs around too much. Vet seems to think its not a big deal, but its really scary. Anybody had this issue this long? |
Welcome to YorkieTalk. How long has the cough been present? It gets worse when exercising? Have they mentioned anything about chest xrays? Have you gotten a second opinion? |

Time for a second opinion, and just ask for a referral to a specialist. It maybe something as simple as allergies, or it may be a type of resistant kennel cough (ie resistant to the meds already prescribed). It also maybe CT or collapsing trachea. Has the vet ruled out CT? Has the vet listened to the heart and tested lung function? |
Hopefully it is just a stubborn case of kennel cough. When I got Cali as a puppy she had kennel cough and gave it to my older pom. It took them a little over 3 months to completely get rid of it. Towards the end they would only cough in the morning or when real active. I did have my vet check them every few weeks to make sure it wasn't something more serious. You could get a second opinion to ease your mind. I hope Texas gets over it soon. And welcome to YT. |
Yes when I get home and start to play with him he hacks and hacks for the first 10 min then it stops, but in the middle of the night you can hear him coughing. Not all night but it wakes me up because I get worried. He plays and eats like nothing is wrong but it cant feel good to be coughing like that. He is only 2lbs and so little I have never had a small dog. I did buy him from a puppy store, and the vet told me it is common for it to last awhile but Im scared he will get worse. |
Gizmo had kennel cough and it took two different rounds of anitibiotics to get him over it. One round was more powerful then the other. He would cough alot in the morning, and then seemed to be okay, but one night he woke us up coughing and it was bad. The cough could almost be described as a dog hacking up hairball. |
