Anyone know about Yorkie vs Shih Tzu?? Hi there! I feel like I am forever investigating getting a puppy! But I so want to make the right decision! I have heard great things about both the Yorkie and Shih Tzu. I was wondering if anyone has knowledge or information about the differences between the two, i.e. which is more care/grooming, health problems, temperment, etc. I have read that Yorkies are more yappy and excitable than Shih tzus, is this true? The care seems overwhelming for a Shih tzu...Are Yorkies needing that much care/grooming/cleaning?? Maybe all puppies/dogs need same care and I just didn't know it!!! Any help at all is greatly appreciated!!!! Have a great day! |
Hi, Welcome to the group.. I will tell you what I know and have learned from experience. I have several yorkies.. some are yappy, some are not. some are very hyper and others very calm. It really depends on the parents disposition I think.. Your breeder should be able to tell you what kind of disposition the puppy has. I have 1 shih tzu male.. He is the sweetest most loving little dog.. He's not barky at all. Very quiet, however my daughter has a girl shih tzu that is very hyper and yappy.. so I guess it all boils down to their inherited disposition. The shih tzu coat is a LOT more maintance than the yorkie. I can brush my shih tzu and he gets snarls overnight.even in his puppy cut.. now I know why so many people cut down their shih tzu coat. Each breed has their own health issues. I've heard a lot of people say the males are sweeter than females.. of any breed. I hope I've help a little. |
Of course, everyone here is partial to Yorkies, so we're all going to tell you to get a Yorkie :) I had a friend who had a ShihTzu, and although she was a very very happy dog and extremely cute, she wasn't very smart. I remember her owner having problems with her peeing all over the house and eating her own poop, but that's most likely the fault of the owner. |
My female yorkie happens to be much sweeter than my male maltese. I think that most of us here are going to say go with a yorkie. |
Remember that I'm saying this because I'm prejudiced as a yorkie owner. Shih-tzu's give me the creeps. Archie doesn't bark unless he wants his ball that went under the couch. Shih-tzu's aren't big barkers, either, but I know this one that lives in my building and he's always got this runny nose and he's so dirty. That's not the first shih-tzu I've seen that's dirty, either. They do need more grooming than yorkies. Yorkies have hair and I just brush Archie every day or every other day and he's fine. |
I lost a $100 deposit on a male Shih Tzu puppy when I changed my mind and decided to get Bo. The Shih Tzu puppy was ADORABLE!!! But, to be honest the adults had faces only a "mommy" could love. I wanted a Shih Tzu cause my research said that they had very sweet temperaments. I wanted a lap dog and that's what I read that they were. I have a Schnauzer who is DEFINATELY NOT a lap dog and I wanted the opposite of him, although I love him very much. I had decided I'd keep the Shih Tzu in a puppy cut so the coat would be low maintenance. I'm accustomed to having a dog that has to be groomed so that part didn't bother me. Anyway, make a long story short, 15 minutes after I put the deposit on the Shih Tzu, I was looking in the paper and low and behold there was a new add for Yorkie puppies, VERY reasonable, and only 10 minutes away from where I was. The Shih Tzu breeder wouldn't return my calls and when I finally reached him he said "no refunds" which the receipt had said. I couldn't be happier with Bo, my Yorkie!!! I'm so glad I didn't get the Shih Tzu. The puppy was a Christmas surprise for my kids and they've since said they think Shih Tzus are ugly. We adore Bo. :) |
