Yorkie coat Abby is 4 months old and the hair that is coming in is very cottony to the point where I can see her getting many mats. Is this going to be her new coat or is it transitional . It is almost white in color but the texture is what I am concerned about. |
It's probably still in the transitional stage, for a long long while that's what Rizzo's fur was like. It still tangles really easy on certain parts, but as long as I brush daily it's not a problem. His coat is a combination coat (from what I can tell) meaning not quite a cotton coat, but also not the ideal silky coat. |
I hope it gets better because it really feels like it can mat up easily. Her original coat was pretty nice to brush with very little matting. I do brush her daily and she doesn't really mind it. Someone had said that she will get another coat after this one she is getting. But that it could take up to a year. Is that true? |
I think it can take up to 2 or 3 years, I'm not positive on that though. Rizzo is 18 months and still breaking color. |
My experience is limited to the 2 Yorkies I have now, but based on them and a few things I have read from experienced breeder/exhibitors, the coat can go through many changes past the first year. Teddy's coat was never cottony, but it was difficult to work with during his first year. He is now 2 and his coat is silky and easy to care for. |
My Aja had very nice matt-free coat as a baby. At about 15 weeks, it turned horribly cottony. Now she is 23 weeks and her hair is silky and super shiny |
Oh that would be wonderful and it didn't even take Aji a whole year. That is good I hope I have the same luck. But I see you know what I mean by a horrible cotton texture. She will have to wear a crew cut for the rest of her life if it doesn't change. lol |
