Hi. My name is Kathie and I am new to the forum. I live in North Carolina.

I had three yorkies that I lost to a house fire last year. This was the most difficult thing I have ever been through. Nothing else we lost meant anything after losing my precious furbabies. They were 7,6 and 5 years old.

I now have a yorkie that was one in March. Abby is a sweet, lovable puppy that has slowly wormed her way into my heart. I never knew how hard it would be to let another puppy in.

Abby is great. She has no flaws EXCEPT I got her from a kennel where she was supposedly puppy pad trained. NOT. She goes pee anywhere she wants. She uses the dog door to go outside to pooh - but I have caught her coming in to pee. It is really frustrating and I am about at wits end with house training. Luckily the new house has all hardwood floors - but I have had to take all the rugs up because she peed on them (as well as on the hardwood floors). She is not particular about where she goes, if she has to go, she goes.

I really love yorkies and can not imagine living without at least one in my life. I look forward to meeting others who feel the same.

Hi Kathie! Welcome to YT! So, sorry for the loss of your three furbabies. How terrible that must have been.

Glad that you now have Abby! Yorkies are wonderful, fun, sweet furbabies.


As far as the potty training, I will tell you what I did to get Rosie to potty outside. I got Rosie at 6 months old. She was not completely potty trained. This is what I did. I would take her outside and we would stay until she used the bathroom. Then I made a huge production of it! We would praise, praise, praise. Then she would get a treat! It may not work for everyone but it did for us. Now the only time she will pee in the house is if she is really mad at me! :eek: Then she does it on my bedroom rug. Lol.

Potty training does take a lot of patience, obviously. Looks like you received some great advice above. Just want to add to please be careful with the doggie door because of wild animals and hawks.

Anyway, we are glad you are here and hope to see pictures soon.

Hi Kathie, First let me say I am sorry for the loss of your three Yorkies, I can only imagine how hard that must of been.

It sounds like you have found a little gem with your Abbie with the exception of the pee "accidents". Let me tell you, I have been there and it is NOT fun.

What I did was made Sophie Kate follow a schedule, it started out every hour we went outside and stayed until she went and then like someone else suggested we had a HUGE celebration. That expanded to 2 hours and now we are up to about every 4 hours (and right before bed and when we first wake up).

Are you crate training her? That was a huge help for me, Sophie Kate goes in the crate whenever I am gone from home for longer than 1 hour and she had to earn the privilege of one hour of free roam. My rules where she went outside before she goes in the crate and immediately after.

The most important thing I learned is you have to stay consistent with the potty training meaning the schedule, celebrating and crating when you are gone.

Another thing I did was teach Sophie Kate the command "Go Potty". When we went outside I would say ""go potty" and give her a special treat when she went (in her case it was Cheerio's). Now as she is older if it raining or we go somewhere it is very easy to get her to go, I just use the command and reinforce it with a cheer or treat...still to this day.

Good luck and keep working at it, you will get there. It took me two years to get Sophie Kate fully trained.

You've gotten some good advice, the only thing I can add is, patience, patience, and more patience.

Welcome to YT. This had to be such a devastating loss for you. I am happy to hear your new little girl is helping to heal your heart. I don't have any advice for the potty training. I have 4 Yorkies and they usually do pretty good outside or the girls prefer pads. My youngest, 8 month old Sassy can be caught occasionally peeing on a rug. I just show her where the pad is and treat her when she does good.
