Found a Huge Thorn in His Leg.. Eeek!
 
Just now I was rubbing Harley over looking for burrs etc and felt a weird scab on his rear left flank. It was raised off the skin quite a bit so I scratched it but it didn't pop off. Harley gave me a dirty look for picking at it but I had a weird feeling about it. So I got a hold of it between my finger nail tips and pulled. And out popped a HUGE thorn! :eek: I was like what in the heck!? It must have really hurt him but I hadn't noticed him licking or chewing on that area at all. And it had to have been there for a quite a while bc it had scabbed completely over. When I looked back down at his skin where it had come out of it was like a gaping hole! Eeek! So I sort of pinched it and out came some yellow liquid/puss so I wiped it with peroxide and then dabbed some neosporin on it. Did I do the right thing? Should I have any reason to worry? :confused:

Poor Harley! :( I would get him to the vet anyway and get him an antibiotic shot...just to be on the safe side. No telling how long it's been there. You did good to clean it but that would could be deep and therefore the infection could be deep. Keep us updated!

I agree with Kimberley, just to be safe from infection. Poor little guy ;(

Depending on how large and how deep the hole is, I would treat the area with a good antibiotic salve --- I have found that Emu OIL is the greatest. The product I use is produced by a company called Laid in Montana :confused: (I wonder about the name, LOL) . Anyway, it contains Emu Oil, Soy Oil, Comfrey, Chamomile Calendula, Lemom Balm, and Vitamin E along with ESSENTIAL OILS of Lavender, Rosemary, Tea Tree and EXTRACTS of Golden Seal and Echinacea. i have used this product for several years successfully on some very nasty deep wounds on my horses and on all wounds that the dogs and I have

I would be careful about the overuse of antibiotic shots .... they interfere with the body's natural ability to fight off infections and one day you might have a life and death issue and will not want your baby's natural immune system to have build up a resistance to the antibiotic.

Could this possibly be part of the reason Harley began to be aggressive?? If you knew about how long the thorn has been there ... the two problems could be related? The reason I am wondering .... when my Amanda was really small, my cousin's Cocker attacked her in the face for apparantly no reason! Amanda had always been very gentle with animals and had played with Muffy all her life! Come to find out, Muffy had an infection going on with her ears & they didn't know it!! She never did anything like that again! Hope you get the infection cleared up and perhaps see a change in Harley's little personality!! ;)

Holey Moley! That is gross. I am so glad that you found it and got it out. I hope that it solves his aggression problems. I remember someone on here had a same type of promblem with aggression with their dog and it turned out that she had been dropped (be a neighbor that didn't tell her momma) and her neck had been thrown out of aliagnment and she became aggressive. After they solved the underlying issue she was back to normal. I sure hope Harley starts feeling better!

I've been taking care of his "boo boo" and the redness etc has completely disapeared and it isn't tender to him at all anymore! :D About the aggression.. wow I NEVER thought about that.. Maybe that's what made that "vet" so mean to Harley.. maybe she has a stethoscope shoved up her BLEEP!!! :p lol But thank you all sooo much for your responses.. I'm going to keep watching it to make sure nothing changes but so far so good! :D

Just wanted to update on Harley.. His boo boo is totally healed and you can't even tell where it was!

Bless his heart - that had to HURT ! So glad you found it and that easily could be a cause for agressiveness - I bet he's so happy his mommy took such good care of him
