Bringing in another furbaby Just wanted to get some input. I am considering bringing in Baci a new brother. However, I was debating on a shih tzu as opposed to another Yorki. Does anyone have any other fur pets? How did you introduce them? What have your experiences been? |
My mom has a shih tzu. Rosie and her don't get along very well. She kinda picks on Rosie. However, they are not around each other every day either. Rosie also hates my Beagles and my cat. But loves my Great Pyrenees. I have been debating getting another Yorkie myself. It just hasn't worked out for us. I know many people that have different ones that can get along. Maybe Rosie just has an attitude. :) |
I have a shih tuz and a Lhasa. I had them berfore I got Remy. The Lhasa does not like Remy- he is a grumpy ole man:eek: Bailey, the shih tuz, and Remy are best friends-- they play all the time. Bailey is very good with Remy. I have a friend who has an older yorkie and got a shih tuz about a year ago. They are doing fine. But she does say the yorkie gets a little upset with the puppy play. I think it depends on the personality of Baci. If you read up on how to indroduce a new puppy and take your time it should be a good thing. The balance for Baci is being a "only" child vs having another dog in the house. BTW.. I love shih tuz!!!! Good luck |

Personality is the key. You have to be the 'top dog' the pack leader. Dogs are just like us, some play well with others and some don't. Some are sweet little folks and some are diva bitchy. Hope you find the perfect fit for your family. Hugs |
We have 2 yorkies, Darwin & Mabel, Zain, our 3/4 pyrenees and Sidney, our 16 year old Bengal cat. They all get along (most times). Sid was first, then Zain, Darwin and finally Mabel. We introduced each slowly and the yorkies met while we were camping. I highly recommend a neutral meeting area. It's almost been a non-issue and absolutely no territorial fighting. One thing to keep in mind before getting a second pup is that travelling is much harder then when you have just one. I used to smuggle Darwin into stores but I haven't even attempted to do this since getting Mabel. It's too hard to find a carrier for my two as Darwin is 7 pounds and Mabel is 4 - too much to carry for me for a long time. Mind you, the yorkies entertain each other for hours at a time at home - good things and bad things when you have more then one.:) |
My Lola is a 1 1/2 yr. old Shih Tzu / Maltese rescue that I've had for a year. I just found my senior Yorkie, Lucy, a few months ago. They get along, and are company for each other, but Lola is a teapot, and is so much bigger. She can be bouncy, rough and too full of puppy play for little tiny, old gal Lucy. One nice thing is the new dog will learn the ropes from the established dog, so the second dog usually adjusts a bit faster. They can also learn the first dog's bad habbits, like begging. ;). Travel is more awkward, but I do it all the time. It does take some planning though. |

thanks everyone for the input. Baci is such a spoiled people person i am not sure how he would take it. He has been to doggy day camp and around other dogs but he is the one that comes up to you with that "save me from these crazies" look. we will find out... |

I introduced my maltese/yorkie mix to my spaniel dog 15 days ago. I was nervous that my other dog wouldnt except my zoey, but all he did for the first few days was ignore and avoid her like the plague! He warmed up to her eventually and now they love wrestling and chasing each other around the house! |
I think it won't matter if the new dog is a Shih Tzu, a Lhasa or a Yorkie.. their personality will let them be friends or not.. it would be better if you could get a new friend and try for a few days.. if they don't get along in a week (sort of) they never will.. |

I agree that it won't be so much the breed but rather the individual personalities of each dog. Size and gender could make a difference too. For instance, I have a very dominant male Westie. As he grew, he got rather 'iffy' with strange dogs. My agility trainer - who had obverved him for over a year - recommended a small, female dog. Breed really didn't matter. But we did need a dog that didn't demand to be 'Queen' of the house since Ringo was clearly an Alpha dog. We searched and found sweet little Lucy - who gets along with him perfectly with her sweet and submissive personality. So it can be done - you just have to find the right dog. And Ringo has made some changes too - Lucy always leads on our walks now AND she has a 'hissy fit' if she even thinks he is going to get on my bed. As long as I continue to feed him first and out the door first - and maintain some semblance of his alpha status - he is content to let her have most of the toys and to lead on our walks. He likes to go slow and smell everything and she likes to go fast. You can do it if you really want but it might take some work! |
