Any ideas on how to stop 14 week old puppy from digging? LOOKING FOR ANY IDEAS!!! I have a 14 week old female yorkie (Daisy) that thinks she is a dirt mover. She can dig a foot deep hole in about 15 minutes. Any ideas on how to break her of this??? I have fixed the fence where she can't dig out but she is making holes big enough someone is going to get hurt. Any suggestions welcome!!! |
Hey I wish I could find the same solution. I have 5 dogs that dig. My yard looks like a golf course. The olny good this is that we have a real big yard and we are able to keep the dogs on one side but they cry to come over to the other side when we're om the deck. I know that yorkies are diggers and it's very hard to break the habit. But as I came to find out that they're not the only diggers. |
now I know why I used to have holes on my garden... everyday was in a diferent place... and I thought it was another animal.. afff |
I had the same problem last year with my son Lab, they stayed with us for a few months...and now I have a new 9 mos old girl Ivy that digs...but I did some research last year when Hank was digging to china...and I found...that if you take their poop and put it in the area they are digging in it will stop them cause they don't like their own poop. I did it and it worked, Hank stopped digging and so has Ivy....Its the same as if...they won't poop or pee where they sleep...well they won't dig where there is poop either....she might start a hole else where, you just have to keep putting poop there but they will stop after a few trys...good luck...let me know how it works...it worked great for us. |
My mom had a dog that dug like crazy and she bought a spray at petsmart called no dig that u spray where they are or would dig and it worked very well. |

Yorkies do love to dig. I've had pretty good luck giving them a better alternative when they start to dig. Tossing a ball or giving them a favorite toy. I will say that both mine grew out of the worst of their digging. My planter box was never safe in the first year or so of their lives. |
Hide their little shovels. |
Since there are 6 dogs here there isnt much of a place that they would want to dig. The job noone likes is to poop scoop the backyard. |
Just an Idea When we were in "puppy school" our trainer touched on this issue in regards to Yorkie behaviors. He said it was "hardwired" and some would always have this behavior. He suggested getting a baby pool, filling it with sand and burying their toys/treats in it. That way they would learn that was their "digging spot" and use it. He had had good success with this intervention and other clients. We never had an issue with Bella digging. So I can't say if it worked by experience. Just an idea you might try. |
