Nail cutting blunder, need advice Since I'm getting another furbaby I decided that I'll do the grooming for my maltese Barney and my future shorkie, Bella. I clipped Barney's nail to short and it bled a little so I put quick stop on it then later hydrogen peroxide. My husband was annoyed with me and made me feel worse. Any advice for better nail clipping? The nail grinder device looks too big for small toy breeds. Thanks:) |
For me, it's worth it to take Tatum to the vet and pay $14 for them to cut her nails. I recently found out that there's another place in town that will do them for $7. She lets the vet or vet tech do them in under a minute but when I try we fight and wrestle forever. She used to let me until she was about a year old and then all of a sudden it became impossible. Sorry I couldn't help more. |
The nail grinder worked on my dog, but sometimes she was afraid of the noise it made. I've found that a regular emery board works well as long as your baby can sit still long enough. We use an emery board just to file the nails down and get rid of the sharp tip without having to worry about cutting too short at first Gabby wouldn't sit still long enough, but we made it a routine for her to have her nails filed at least twice a week and now she doesn't mind a bit. |
When Heidi was a puppy I would trim just the tip of one nail and give her a tiny treat till they were all done, taking a short break when needed. She does great now. I usually do a whole foot now & then her treat just to keep her happy. |
What do you mean annoyed with you? That's just silly. I have no advice for you except do a little bit at a time trying to avoid the quick (when you cut, the end of the nail is whitish - when you see a black dot in the middle, stop, that is the quick). This happens all the time (even when vets and techs do it). There is no way you can guarantee that it won't happen again. It's just a nail. Don't worry about it. |
Thanks!!:) I thought the quick was sopposed to be pink. I do notice the end tip being white and will just snip a little at a time or file with an emery board. Thanks for the support, hubby doesn't.:( |
You're welcome! =) |

my friend uses that on her dog and said it's amazing |
Look under the nail on bottom the hollow point at tip can be cut ,don't cut the thicker part looks like there's something in it .you can use soap or candle wax at home to seal it if accidently cut to short. |
i took mine to a groomer and she came back with every single nail quicked. i was furious and never went back there. i do my own nail trims now and rarely do i quick them and it's usually only ONE nail per trim which is NO BIG DEAL. sure it kinda hurts them and it bleeds and you just apply quick stop and it's over. not a big thing and it's much cheaper and better than the bad groomer quicking ALL of their nails. you'll get better at it as you go. just line up the trimmer with the pad of the foot and cut anything that's curling past where the blade lays when laying flat against the pad of the foot. i know that doesn't make sense in writing but there are diagrams showing you how to do it proper. good luck!! |
This happens to everyone,no matter how long you have been doing dogs nails. I did two of the dogs here yesterday and cut one of the nails to short on the big poodle (13lbs). I've been grooming dogs for about 40years. Sometimes I move, sometimes they move,it just happens. As for hubby getting upset. Let him give it a shot! Who knows he might decide that it is his job. |
I agree with the others. The groomer can accidentally cut the quick also. I don't think anyone else would be more careful with their own baby than you. I have 3 Maltese too. With the white nails the quicks show through as the pink thicker part. Some dogs have longer quicks than others. Just take off a little at a time. I use human nail clippers on the tips, then my husband grinds them with the dremmel just enough so they are smooth. Taking breaks and treats are great tips. Celebrate after each foot if you need to take the pressure off you and her. |
