Ideas for Vet Med Foundation/Funding Since joining this forum, I've been really saddened by the lack of vet care available to animals and lack of funding towards vet med care in general compared to human medicine. My husband and I have been kicking around ideas about a foundation to help pet owners in need care get vet care for animals and/or some way to start getting more attention to vet med so that more research dollars could go towards finding more effective ways of treating conditions in canines that already exist. It just seems like the ppl in vet care have their hands tied a lot due to funding issues. It has to be frustrating. Does anyone have any ideas? I know we have a wide range of backgrounds here, so I was hoping ppl might have some ideas of how to accomplish these goals - if they are even possible! |
Don't know where you are from in PA, but your vet school there is outstanding -- they might help. |
http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/eme...vet-bills.html Are you thinking of anything like some of the orgs in the thread above? Maybe those links/orgs will inspire some ideas. I think it's great that you and hubby are looking into helping animals. :) |
I think this is a great idea, but first look at the list of organizations that Ann posted. These are people who tried the same thing, but many can't operate anymore because they have no $$$. The AAHA has/had a fund too. The problem is money or lack there of. Tons of organizations want donations and the money just doesn't come in. So most importantly, you'll have to come up with a unique way of getting donations. |

I guess why ppl don't donate was the 1st thought. There are so many pet owners in this country, you would think they would want to see animals cared for adequately, research $ going into new/better treatments for diseases they suffer from, etc. As for vet charging, in my exp I have found vets to be more than reasonable in their fees. Considering the amount of education for DVM, staff, equipment, building overhead - very reasonable. I have heard some think pet ins would help answer vet payment problems, but w the mess health ins has turned into in human med I am not sure that's the answer. |
It's the attitude of a lot of pet owners. They are "just dogs you know". They can barely afford to pay for their own animals' care or just don't want to. And there are SO MANY animal organizations needing money. For instance, I love animals very much, but I rarely donate to any org. because we're up to about $8K in bills with Ellie already. The people who love animals enough to donate usually have some of their own and that's where the money goes. I think vets tend to not charge enough. |
