This is driving me crazy! This is day 2 of Rosie chewing on her front paw! It is just one paw but she is chewing on it like crazy. I have looked and looked and can not find anything. However, after I look she is mad at me and will not have anything to do with me! Which is soooo unlike her! I know in the past during the summer we have had allergy issues. Does this sound like allergies? Chewing on only one of her paws? I haven't changed foods or anything. Nothing new at all. Any ideas? |
It sounds like a hot spot may be forming to me. Are you sure there isn't a tiny bite of some sort on there? It could be related to allergies. I know some dogs lick and chew out of boredom, but I wouldn't think that was the case with Rosie. Also, some dogs lick a spot that is wounded and are very protective of it. Since this is a very abnormal behavior for her, you should probably have the vet check her out just to make sure everything is okay. That happened to one of my parents' Old English Sheepdogs and one of her toes was out of place! :( |
i'm guessing it is allergy related. My chihuahua tootsie has allergies and i have done so much research on this... no easy answer, so hard if not impossible to find out the cause. |
I have a Yorkie now and one in the past who both had seasonal allergies. Foot licking and chewing is something they did when the allergies really bothered them. My older dog chewed and licked at both paws but my younger one focuses mostly on her left paw. Sometimes they would also scratch at their ears or rub their eyes with their paws. It was always worse in the spring & summer. It can be managed and here are a few things I found helpful to manage their symptoms. Use a good filter on your air conditioner and change it montly. Keep your lawn mowed and limit their time outdoors to going potty only when their triggers are at their highest. (My older dog reacted when the Oak trees produced pollen & my younger girl when the summer flowers bloom). Keep your home vacuumed often and maybe bathe your dog once a week to reduce the allergen load. If the dog is just miserable take her to the vet. Liquid Benadry and/or other liquid antihistamines like Clariton or Zyrtec work wonders but you should check with your vet to rule out any other problems and for him to tell you the dose to give your dog. Teresameg great advise!!!! I have a GS years ago w/grass allergy. My vet suggested washing his paw pads when he came in as well. Maybe soaking her little paws would help a ittle. Maybe a 5 to 10 minute soak in just warm water and then wash and dry them to see if that'll help. Poor girlie! So sorry |
I am in mandatory meeting tomorrow. So, I can't get Rosie in to vet until Thursday. However, he is having me try the Benadryl to see what happens. Hubby thinks maybe she might have a chigger bite? She did have her little run in the woods! We had a problem with chiggers last year as well. Didn't know that dogs could get chiggers bites! Lol. If she is not better, then we will take her in. In the mean time, I will try soaking her paw. Anything has to help. It is just strange she is only doing it to one of them. Thanks all for the suggestions! |

Ok, we now know what the problem is. My sweet baby had chigger bites! Again!! I hate these stupid things! Dealt with them last year. Looks like we are dealing with them again! Yard getting sprayed this weekend. Grrrr!!! Living in the country is just lovely! :eek: |
Ya know, I notice Maddie does this from time to time. It is always one foot and she will go at it for a day or so, then nothing for weeks. I have also inspected her feet, toes, pads, trimmed hair, everything. I am glad you found your culprit. I will have to keep an eye out for this next time she has this type of episode. :) |
