Help!! I just noticed when i brought Marley outside before to do #2 he was doing that "wipe his tush on the ground" than i felt around his tushy and there was a little squshy feeling. Does this mean that his anal glands need to be emptied? Should i do it myslef? Or wait til I go to the vet? Is this hurting him? Can it cause any serious problems and can it be prevented or it just happens to some dogs? |
Check his stool and see if it is soft. Sometimes dogs will wipe their tush on the ground wipe off poop on their butts. |
Mine both do that after they do number 2 too. Thay are just cleaning their bottoms. |
He had a little bit attached to him so i cleaned him up...i think that's what it was! Thank you! |

anal glands Hi, I am a certified professional groomer and it sounds to me like you have one that is not emptying his own anal glands. I have to empty about half of my yorkies anal glands and most on the small dogs I groom. Yes! It can cause problems and can get impacted! You do not often see anal gland problems on large dogs because the size of the stools. When they go, it emptys the anal glands on the way out. Unfortunately that is not true with small dogs. I empty anal glands on all small dogs I groom unless they do not easily release. If they do not, I fill out a vet ref card and have them take them to their vet. Not easily releasing usually means they are impacted. If you force them, you can actually blow holes in them which require surgery. You can take him to your vet and have your vet show you how, or to a good (trained) professional groomer. Make sure the groomer is schooled as there are a lot of self taught ones out there. I do mine everytime I bath them. Another sign of full glands is dragging of the butt. Ricki |
My vet showed me how to empty the anal glands, but I am hoping Wosie won't ever need me to do it, as it makes me squeamish to consider, lol... Now I won't take offense if anyone needs to correct me on this, but this is what I observed: the anal glands are located just below the anus at the 4 and 8 oclock positions. My vet took her index and middle fingers (wrapped in a paper towel) and gently inserted them under the glands, pushed up like she was getting her fingers behind them, and then pulled forward gently. A brownish fluid got expelled, and the smell will knock you over, lol. I hope if anyone tries this they know I have NOT tried this, and will probably always ask my vet to do it so I don't lose my cookies trying it myself!! She did emphasize that you need to be really gentle. Wosie has not done the butt drag much since she got them emptied. |
anal glands You are correct about the location. There are two of them. One on each side of the anus. If they are full, you will be able to feel them. You push in on the side of them and then push up and basicly milk them a few times until they are empty. (Never force if they don't release)! That usually means an impaction. In that case, a vet should do it. And you are right about the smell. When I am grooming in the shop, I wet the dog down, empty the anal glands and be ready with the hose and soap! There is no other smell in the world like it! Ricki |
