New to YT Hi, I don't have a Yorkie yet, but have started talks with a breeder. I've been reading a lot at YT and think this is a pretty cool board. Looking at everyone's pics gave me Yorkie fever, haha. Anyway, I have a few questions. I have an 11 year old cat (who I've had since she was 12 weeks old). What would be the best way to go about introducing them to each other? She's a very mellow cat, just kind of wanders around looking for her next nap. I'm also thinking of indoor potty training. I live in Alaska, and I've seen lots of toy dogs out and about, but I can't imagine making *my* dog go outside in the middle of January when it's oh-so-cold. :p Does anyone here litter box train or use pee pads? I'm curious about your experiences. I'm open to outdoor training as well, just seriously considering indoor potty training. What's the best way to prevent an onset of hypoglycemia? Do you feed on a schedule or leave food out all day? I don't even have a dog yet and I'm already full of questions! I guess since I'm talking with a breeder it's getting closer to becoming a reality, I'm just excited! |
Hi and Welcome to YT! When I introduced my Yorkies to my cats, I bought a cat tree for the cats to be able to get up and away if they wanted to, and made sure they have other places to go where the Yorkies can't get to them. So far, so good. I use washable peepads for overnight and when I go out, but during the day they go outside. I bought a doggy litter box, but they really don't care too much for the litter or the box. Puppies over 12 weeks of age are less likely to develope hypoglycemia. Keep a tube of Nutrical in the house. Feeding on a schedule helps, as does leaving some kibble out. Also limiting playtime, scheduling naps and treats in between meals can help prevent it. Also know how much the puppy eats though.... Nothing like being prepared.... Hi. Welcome to YT! I use disposable pee pads. I x-pen trained mine to go on pee pad. Worked really well. It's nice, too, if you are away from home for a couple of hours, if the weather is bad, etc. With my cat, I just gave her a kitty stand, also, and parts of the house she had access to that the dog did not. My yorkies have seemed to like cats, although they are like pesky little brothers and like to steal the cat's toys! |
Hi and welcome to YT. Lexi is pee pad trained. It has worked out great for us as we take her everywhere we go and the pee pads too...LOL It makes it nice in hotels as we don't have to take her out at night and when we visit friends don't seem to mind either. She learned so quickly..and it really is nice when it is bad outside. I bet you won't have any trouble with the kitty. Lexi loves cats....she has 2 friends that are cats :D Nice to see you are doing your homework :D never can be too prepared...LOL |
We have Axel he is going to be 2 in Sept. We pee pad trained on throw away (which I would recommend) and then we switched to the like hospital pads we have about 8 of them and have one in the living area one in the bedroom and one in the rec room. He does well with pee but not poop..but i got over it cause i have tried everything. And thank goodness he poops are not hard to pick up. Welcome lots of wonderful people here and great information. My dogs are trained for outdoors and indoors. The girls like the washable pads indoors. |
