New to the site, proud new owner Hi, after waiting and looking for the right puppy we brought home our 12 week old baby on the 29th. She is beautiful and weighs 2lbs 3oz. We are having issues with her eating. We have tried her breeders kibble, Royal Canine, and Nutro Kibble with little success. It is like she eats everything once but refuses it the next time. We have tried canned also. I don't want a picky eater but she does need to eat something, any suggestions? I have had yorkies before as well as other breeds and have never had a puppy be so picky. Where is the line between making them a picky eater and keeping them healthy? |
Yorkies are very self willed little dogs..they will try and be boss...and you will "work" for them... Changing food makes them more picky...select a quality food and feed 3 times a day...if she skips a meal or two it will not hurt her..just when you think they are going to starve, they eat...and a 2 pounder realy does not need much food at once to be full... I have two, 3 pound adults and they eat one a day well..and nibble at the second meal. I would give her Nutra-cal for good measure. Mine take IN vitamin suppliment..used it for 30 yrs...rarely have a sick Yorkie. |
Welcome and congratulations. Good luck on the eating thing. For months, Murfee sat in my lap and I fed him piece by piece. |
Welcome to YT! Congratulations on your new furbaby. I fortunately don't have a picky eater, I worry that she is eating too much. She is 5 months old today and hopefully now, we have found a common ground between too much and not enough. |

Welcome to Yorkie Talk and congrats on your new precious baby. I don't have feeding advice for a picky eater. My Jada doesn't turn her nose up at very much. I have to watch every bite as she tends to pork up very easily. Good luck:) |
Thanks, It is hard not to be over the top over this baby, she is our dream girl. Our other Yorkie died at fifteen in January and left a whole in our hearts. We tried hard to go with the a good breeder, did all the right things and now I find myself worried sick she isn't eating right. I so appreciate your kind words....most everyone else is so sick of hearing PUPPY. |
Just wanted to say WELCOME & Congrats on your sweet baby!:) |
After waiting all day for my new girl to eat I broke down and gave her 1/2 of a gerber meat steak which she wolfed down. Now I am quilt ridden, it is hard after waiting for so long for her to be worried sick she isn't eating...Help please...I don't mind the extra care I just don't want to make thing worse.... |

Abba is 13 weeks old weighs 2 lbs 3 oz. He nibbles the dry kibble off and on. which I leave down. At real meal times I mix a tablespoon of moist kibble and a table spoon of Gerber Baby food meat. I feed him this in his crate. What he doesn't eat in 15 min.s is picked up. I only fed him Nutra-cal (twice) that first day because he was stressed and did not eat any food. I do not change the brand of kibble. He was eatting it fine in 3 days. Good Luck |
Welcome to YT! So sorry to hear that you recently lost your furbaby. Sounds like you have a new special friend though to help start filling that hole in your heart. I wish you all the best with this new one. I know how nerve racking everything can be. Can't wait to see pictures! What's her name? |
Her name is Gabryella (Gabby). Thanks to all for the advise on feeding! Sent my husband for Gerber Baby Food Meat. I did try to download a picture, didn't work so I will try again. Getting her to hold still long enough to take a picture is interesting. |
I never had this problem, my 4 love to eat. There are a lot of good people here to give you advice. Welcome to Yorkie Talk. |
Welcome! My lil girl is 5months old, she gets Wellness,it doesn't take much, mixed with about a tablespoon full of wet food,in the morning. I have tried sprinkling parm cheese (just a tiny bit) on her food in the morning and after a while she didnt like that either. Right now I mix a few pieces of dried Gerbers baby apple with it in the morning, she gets a couple of baby carrot sticks in the afternoon ( I usually quater these length wise) and in the evening she gets kibble and wet food again. There is almost always kibble in a bowl but I have to make sure that my poodles dont eat it because it makes them sick. There are several people with great ideas on this forum. I had the same problem with Mina not eating and was able to read about some really good ideas. Good look!! |
My Moses is 7 months old. He is a picky eater, too. He is on his 4th kind of food. I switched him from Innovus to Nutro Ultra a couple of months ago. He stopped eating that while he was teething, so I decided to wet it down with warm water. His gums hurt, so he couldn't eat it dry! He is still pretty picky and will eat well for 2 days, then he gets picky again. He came home from daycare with an upset tummy and has been laying around all night! He finally just nibbled on his food and drank some water. But I am finding that he is NOTHING like my sweet Lab Bruno, who inhaled everything! It's been a real adjustment. I would try some moist food because your baby might be teething! |
Welcome to you and Gabby! Zoe was tough to feed also, but really likes Halo Puppy Spot's Stew. It's tiny and she continued to eat it, versus deciding she didn't like it after a time or two, like the others. She will also always eat a few Little Jac treats. (I will, however, admit to the fact that the only way she will eat is sitting on my lap, eating from my hand! I think she is afraid the other dogs will get it--which they would--if she doesn't eat this way.) Good luck! |
Because we have 5 other dogs in the house. I take Mina to my dressing area in the morning to eat. She and I get some time alone, she gets her breakfast without anyone else trying to take it and I dont have to worry about her eating the other guys food. They get to eat while she is with me. |
Norman is 4.5 months. He is eating the Royal Canin Yorkie Puppy kibble - he seems to like it. When he first came home and was a bit stressed I gave him access to kibble all of the time and then gave him Nutri Cal before bed. He is now a 'power eater'. He also will run anyone over that gets between him and a piece of broccoli, carrot, sweet potato, etc. |
Good Mornin, I did try the Halo Spots Stew a couple days ago, she ate it twice and now just ignores it. So this morning I am trying the Royal Canin Puppy with the Gerber Chicken baby food. She liked a little chicken off the kibble and now it sits. The good news is we have had her home for nine days now and her energy level seems good. It does seem like she is running the show already. Still having trouble downloading a pic...says the file is too big? Although I am just clicking on one pic from my computer..:animal36 |
Due to allergies my dog had to be put on a new dog food (after we looked for weeks for one she would eat). We were concerned she wouldn't eat the new food, but he simply said, "Don't worry, when she's hungry she'll eat it," and in no time, she did. |
