Yikes! A dog at Thor's daycare has Giardia I just received an email from the daycare manager that not only does a dog at the daycare have it, but both his owners have contracted it as well! She says this is the first time she's ever heard of humans contracting it from their dog. She says they sanitize everything every night with something specific to kill giardia, and Thor is not showing any symptoms. Still, yikes! |
Oh no! I hope Thor doesn't contract it. That was good of the daycare to notify you. I didn't know it could spread to humans either. |
Hopefully Thor won't get it. I didn't know humans could get it but apparently they can. I just found this link: CDC - Giardia |
I wonder if they are on well water and it's contaminated? In any event, I hope Thor does not get it. While it's highly treatable, it's still not fun. |
I'd give your vet a call, may be good to treat him anyway to be safe... |
Oh how scary. I hope Thor stays healthy and you both don't have to deal with it. |
Sending good thoughts and well wishes to little Thor. Keeping our fingers crossed here that he won't catch this nasty thing. :xfingers: |
Oh, poor little Thor. I hope he doesn't catch it. It scares me for mine to be around other dogs. I know, I'm paranoid. I don't even put mine on the floor at the vets office. Stay well little Thor and God bless. |
That is just plain scary. How will they ever clean everything at the daycare enough for people to feel safe leaving their dogs there? |
Yikes! Hopefully they have something to treat the outdoor or potty area. I wonder if they went camping and drank river water or something. Has there been any flooding in your area? |
They said they use a spray on all the outdoor areas, and clorox the inside every night. It's been raining a lot in SF recently. Apparently, giardia is everywhere here. It's a good reminder for me to be vigilant about Thor drinking from miscellaneous places. I usually bring a bottle of water and a little rubber dish for Thor to drink from when we go out to the park. |
How scary! Have you told your vet about it? I read that Metronidazole (Flagyl) is considered very safe, and is used to treat it. “Metronidazole has two interesting properties--the action is largely confined to the gut and it also seems to stimulate the local immune system. Metronidazole kills off the giardia and reduces the numbers to the level the dog's immune system can handle." Giardiasis: Diagnosis, Treatment, and Prevention The link also informs of a vacine. I hope your little guy doesn't get this. |
