Panting in the car When I take Abby on a car ride she starts sticking her tongue out and panting. It makes me nervous. I always have the ac on as I live in Florida so I do not think she would be hot. Is this normal? |
I have the same problem with 2 of my 4, and I think it is nervous anxiety . My other 2 go to sleep, but the 2 panters keep panting for the whole 1 hr. drive to my daughters, and for a while after we arrive. |
She's probably just a little anxious. Heidi still does that - she's 2 yr old & rides in the car 3 or 4 times a week. She LOVES to go though. Maybe the "excitement." Heidi especially does it when I make her sit in her chair. She's much more calm when she's loose & gets to put her front legs on my arm, but it's just not safe. Does she act like she enjoys it? |
Peyton does this too. i've only had her for 7 months and she's almost 3 years old. it seems she doesnt like riding in the car, she gets nervous. i hope maybe i can get her to relax alittle more. |
My cairn (Izi) does this. she gets car sick and very anxious. My yorkie (Jazi) loves the car. She pants for the first few mins but I crank up the ac for a couple mins., she lays in her snoozer, and is fine after about 3 mins. |
yes Abby does settle and go to sleep. I still get nervous when she is panting because I don't have any water with me. I get nervous with her all the time anyhow. lol I am a new mom so anything out of the ordinary freaks me out. She must think Mama is nuts. |

Bitsy does this also. Luckily she doesn't get sick. She likes to stick her face right into the ac vent lol. |
Mabel did this most times until this past weekend. We had to go for a sporting event in a town three hours away from us. Mabel was anxious and panting but by the end of the trip (six hours in total) she was sleeping like a baby. Maybe just longer drives may help - just a thought.:) |
Its from car nervousness |
Ziva pants in the car from excitement/nervousness, but also has trouble getting into a hot car( it's a different kind of breathlessness), we are really limited on her trips during the hot weather. We take along a bottle of refrigerated water to lay next to her in her car seat and try to pre-cool the car. |
I can tell you, when I get anxious or nervous..I have to crank my AC up, even at home because I get hot from it. Maybe turn your car on with the ac cranked a few mins before you get in... Just a thought. |
Thanks. I feel better knowing Abby isn't the only one that gets like this. |
Thank u for posting about this! I was going to ask but you beat me to it :) gizmo used to cry in the car and now he just pants. We drove home from my moms this morning ( a 3 hour car ride) and he panted the whole time. We made a few stops to walk, potty and drink water. I wish he would settle down sign!!! Can panting for an extended period of time cause any health problems for our babies? |
The first time I experienced this was a long tme ago when I was a teen... I had my cousins puppy and he did it... From him, I learned w my 3 that the AC is NOT enough!!! U need to crack the window as well... It calms them down really quickly and relaxes them... Once they relax and slip off to dream land, u can roll them back up... Out of the 4 dogs Ive ever traveled w, this has worked everytime... It is deff worth the irritating noise. ;) |
