Kobi Hi,Our Yorkie loves to swim (he has a life jacket). He does swallow water once in a while as he is swimming. We let him in (he gets out on the ladder) about 4-5 times then give him a rest for a long time. Does anyone know if it is ok? I think he chokes sometimes and it scares me. Anyone with this problem? |
Hi I dont know if Yorkies are good swimmers.. my little Mel drowned herself in my dad's swimming pool when my sister was looking after her.. :( I would be careful if your yorkie is shocking.. water in his lungs can cause pneumonia.. he might love it but he has no idea that is bad for him... specially if he swims too often.. |
4 Attachment(s) Jackson is a swimming FOOL! We visit my dads house nearly every weekend (or at least once a week) but this past Memorial Day weekend we were there for 5 days. He swam for 5 days, every single day for at least 2hrs (total, not all at once). He voluntarily jumps in, I never force him, mainly because I don't have to. I will entice him with a toy and if he doesn't want to, he won't do it... His head does go under occasionally, he also drinks the water occasionally. I believe you have to worry much more about salt water than chlorine. I'm sure it's not the best thing, of course, but a bit now and then won't hurt them either. Never read or seen a dog become ill from drinking pool water (I did alot of googling). Believe me, I am a water freak... my little brother died and drowned in 2006 so water safety is #1 to me. Swimming is fantastic for both dogs and humans! It's no stress on the joints and an awesome form of exercise -- if your Yorkie loves it, keep it up! |
kobi Thank u all for your input. I am still unsure, but maybe once in and out! |
