I tried searching but most of the info I found was about whether someone should spay their baby.

Even before I got Coco, I was determined to have her spayed.

Now here comes the questions.

I want to educate myself and ask the right questions before going to the vet.

The vet told me he could spay her at 4 months after all of her shots.

Coco is 6 months and her adult teeth are coming in and baby teeth are falling out. In fact, it's been going on for awhile.

I know that different yorkies, different age to get them spayed.

But what is the general age they get spayed?

What types of surgeries are there?
Which one is the best?

What kind of questions should I be asking the vet?

And last but not least, I am starting to see coco's teeth turning yellowy especially during her teething stage. I give her dental chews, brush her teeth and add dental sprinkles to her food. Would it be too much if I requested the vet to also clean her teeth during her spay & pulling out of the baby teeth?

Wouldn't spay a family pet at 4 months. Too young. Six months is pretty common. Some owners hold off awhile and wait to watch the baby tooth situation. Also, there are some questions about bone development and hormones that make owners hold off. I'd personally spay a Yorkie close to 6 months.

The ovariohysterectomy (OHE) is done in the US. Removal of uterus and ovaries.. The (what I assume is termed) ovarectomy (OE) is done in Europe and is just a removal of the ovaries. Honestly, there isn't much difference long-term between the two. This is something you could Google and see the pros and cons of both. Ellie's vet does the OHE. No reason to leave a big organ behind that can get a tumor.

There is an anesthetic protocol thread in the YT Library. That would be good to go over.

Baby teeth will change color as pup gets older because they are dead (as the adult teeth come in). If the adult teeth are turning yellow, it could be because of the baby teeth right there, but you may need to get them cleaned if it continues. Some vets will do it during spay and some won't. It's done last in case the pup is unstable and has to be woken up. It's a good time to start brushing daily.

My vet says 6 months and if she has any baby teeth retained, they will pull them. He says if she is chewing on bones.... we shouldnt have any retained. He told me that with yorkies the anesthesia can be a problem that we should run some blood work to see if she can handle it. My vet is great and not only shows me compassion and knowledge but specializes also in dental work. I would just say... Do your homework in finding a vet that deals with smaller breeds and possibly dental work as well. Good luck:)

We have always waited until the pups were 6 months old......in fact had our 10 month old silky (not quite 5 pounds) spayed this week.

My advise is discuss what medication your vet provides aftere surgery. We had a bad situation come up this week after Annie's spay with the tramadol the vet prescribed. Annie had a bad reaction to this medication and a severe case of constipation......it has been a very long week!

Yes! thats why I told him that I'd wait until closer to the summer because I felt that 4 months was too young too!

I am requesting for information becuase the Korean system is much more different. and I would like to make the right decision. Ive always had male dogs growing up so we'd get them neutered when they're about 8 months but I'd like to get coco spayed before her first heat.

oi! I didnt know that they were given medication afterwards lol I guess its because I was always so young when my dogs got neutered.

I will definately put that on the list of questions to ask.

I'm thinking of taking Coco to the vet in about 2 weeks to get her baby teeth looked at. And at that time I was going to discuss spaying her as well.

Personally for me I would not neuter a female toy breed prior to one year old. But there is a big BUT you must keep her safe during her first heat which in all likelihood will come before one year old. My decision is based on when growth plates close, and the associated risks of early neutering prior to the closing of those growth plates.

I waited until 8 months with Khloe because she was so tiny. At 8 months, she was only 3.8 pounds and did great. With Couver, I had him spayed right at 6 months to avoid any bad male behaviors.

IMHO, 4 months is too young to be spayed.

I thoughht i should poi t that coco is now six months but the vet suggested she could get it do e as young as four months... Apparemtly its the norm in korea if they do get it done...

Spaying should not be done before 6months of age. 6 to 8 months range is good. That way the adult teeth should be in and if you need any baby teeth pulled this is a perfect time to do so. Also here is some more information you should be asking your vet about.
