Pixie's afraid of thunder all of a sudden None of my 4 have been afraid of thunder before. They have always totally ignored it. Last week, Pixie who is 5 1/2 started shaking and panting so hard every time we have a thunder storm. Unfortunately we have had them every few days lately. Today it has been storming for hours and she is so scared. I am going to ask the vet what I can do for her. Has anyone had a dog where out of the blue they became terrified of thunder? I may look on to those thunder shirts to see if they help. Any other suggestions are appreciated. |
Poor Pixie! That is strange that she was never afraid before. We received our Thundershirt this week and tested it during a bad storm. It really worked for Teddy. Usually he is panicked and inconsolable, but he was fine with his Thundershirt. |
Awwww poor baby girl!!!! |
I know what you mean, Central Illinois is right there with Chicago on the thunderstorms almost every day. Someone once told me that a dog responds to patting instead of stroking when they are upset. Macy is terrified of storms also. I wrap her in her blanket and start patting her using the rhythm of a heartbeat. I usually pat her on her rump as she is cuddled beside me. She burys her head in the blanket and won't come up until the storm is over. Now if they could just come up with something for me....I'm terrified of storms as well. |

Kia recently became frightened of loud thunderstorms, and I just lay on the couch with her, pull a blanket up over us, and tell her, "The storm is out there, and we're in here, safe." And she goes to sleep. I think we've just had too many storms for her comfort level this year. Sheila |
My Jewels gets nervous if its a really bad storm. Usually shes okay though but one time she was shaky and it ended up we had a tornado warning |

I believe they can sense it when it is going to be bad. Sheila |
Thanks. Pixie is not one to sit in my lab normally but now when it thunders she runs to my lap. I will try wrapping her up and snuggling with her. The storms have been pretty severe so I hope that is why she is getting so scared. I am hoping fireworks aren't going to upset her now too. We live less than a mile away from a Six Flags Amusement Park and they set off fireworks all the time. |
Oh no! Poor Pixie! I was going to suggest a Thundershirt... or you could try a sweatshirt if she has any. I've read they're bothered more by the excess electricity in the air (common during storms) than anything, and that snug fitting shirts help protect them from it. |

Poor girl. Definitely try the Thundershirt. It has completely changed Cooper during storms and we are now successfully testing it with some of his other anxiety issues. |

I have one that alerts me before the storm arrives, during the night she will bark when she hears the thunder in the distance |

Maybe she feels safe next to him..they are strange but so lovable little creatures |
I feel so bad that Pixie is scared of thunderstorms now. I do think the thundershirt is worth a try. If it doesn't work, you can send it back for a refund. I've always been so thankful that mine aren't afraid of thunder, and hopefully they won't do what Pixie is doing. Poor baby. You sure have had a lot of storms! |

Poor Pixie! I hope her limp goes away quickly. You aren't going to believe this, but we had a thunderstorm here...wasn't even that bad. Libby wanted me to hold her...she was so nervous. She didn't shake, but was noticeably shook. So, I stuck her in that sling carrier I have and she was fine. She's stick her head out now and then, and when it thundered, she'd just bury her head inside. So, what's up with that? She's never been scared of them before either! |
I just googled Thundershirts and OMG you guys are geniuses this is why I come here. I would have never known. Roxy isn't afraid of thunder but she has major separation anxiety and I am willing to give anything a try to make her more comfortable. |
