HELP, My Yorkie Pees everywhere, any suggestions Hi All I'm new to this site, I'm not sure what to Ive recently moved in with a friend until I get my own house which I'll never be able to afford cause I'm going to have to replace all the carpets here, I just noticed that Teddy has been peeing everywhere and unless I can break him of this I'll have to find him a new home, he was a rescue that came to me about 3 years ago, he's about 7 years old now, does anyone have any suggestions please...Thanks so much |
Hello and welcome:) So, I'm assuming he was fully housebroken and didn't do this where you lived previously? I'd say you just have to go back to basics of housebreaking as a little refresher course for him if that's the case. Could be he's stressed from the move or just isn't sure about the new house and what he's supposed to do there. Are there other pets there at all? Is he nuetered?? That's a big one cause if not, it would be very natural for him to territory mark a new home. You'll just have to watch him very closely and follow him around the house so you can catch him in the act and quickly take him outside. Like I said, if he's previously housebroken, it should take long for him to get in the swing of things at your friend's house. |
Welcome to YorkieTalk. Has Teddy had a recent exam by a vet? Sometimes urinary tract problems or other health issues will cause potty problems. I would start there. Was he ever potty trained during the time he has been with you? Is he pad or outdoor trained? You can also keep him confined to a small area with an easy to clean floor when you cannot supervise him and while you work on solving this issue. Definitely start with the vet. |

Thanks for your quick reply, I'll give you the rundown, I was living with my hubby and two other dogs, and yes he did pee on the carpet in the other house, and it was always around furniture, here he'd lift his leg and pee on the couch leg or the bed leg, however we removed all carpet, and this seemed to alleviate the problem, now I'm no longer in my own home my hubby and I have broken up, unfortunately the Cavaliers went to the little girl across the street cause they had to be together and I kept Teddy, and yes he is neutered, he was around 2 when we got him and we had him neutered at that time. Because I'm staying at a friends removing all the carpet is not an option, I just noticed the extent of the damage he's done, and she's not aware of it yet... |

If he is peeing all over the house then you need to restrict his access. I would also suggest you order him bellybands so that when he does lift his leg the pee will be caught by the bellyband. Cathy (107barney) sells bellybands that have a lining inside to give extra absorbency. Very well made product. I sew and have made my own in the past but these have the bumpkin barrier and now order mine from her. Here is a link to her site and she offers a YT discount. Washable Belly Bands by T. Bumpkins & Co. and Doggie Pee Pads Some dogs just are never fully potty trained so you need use alternatives like a bellyband. Truthfully, by allowing him to pee inside your home for years previously you allowed him to think this behavior was appropriate. I highly doubt at this time you will be able to change this behavior. When you order my suggestion would be to get at least 5 or 6 to start. They will need to be changed several times a day. Also purchase a good Urine Cleaner to clean up any areas that he has marked previously. These three simply steps will save you from purchasing an entire house of new carpeting for your friend. |

Just ordered Gizmo his belly band from Cathy! Hehe! Anyway, I agree sounds like a combination of upset, marking, and a little bit of a training relapse. Sadly too, pets know when you're upset. So, he could be feeding off your emotions and using the marking as getting your attention, even if it's negatvie. I know it sounds odd, but my brother has a cairn who bascailly started marking everywhere because it got him attention since there was always constant upset in his home. I would try confining him, getting natures miracle, and using a belly band. I know for a fact he won't like having that wet pad up against him and I have a feeling will snap out of his rut. Remember though, dogs feed off your energy, especially if it's negative. If you are constantly worried he's going to let you down, then he probably will. Training starts, and restarts with training the owner and then the dog! :p Good luck, praying everything works! Please keep up updated! |
