Grr!
 

I was taking out Gizmo to go potty, when I saw two younger girls (probably about 11 years old) with a young yorkie walking around the street across from me. The one little girl ran down the side walk calling the dog, but the dog didn't follow. Meanwhile, when the little girl ran, Gizmo turned around and saw the little dog and was doing his meerkat, (it's where he stands on his back hind legs and is at attention). Anyway, the dog didn't follow the one little girl, so the other little girl grabs the little dog and literally throws him down the sidewalk. Just when I couldn't think it would get worse Gizmo started barking and the little Yorkie, who luckily landed on his feet (would hate to see how many knee problems he'll have when he gets older), came flying towards Gizmo. Only problem was, Gizmo was on the opposite side of the street...And there was a car coming. The little girls started yelling. So, I made a whistle noise and yelled "COME ON BOY!" and he ran fast enough to make it by the car and come to me. The little girls came running after and jumped on his leash which was attach to his collar (note I say collar and not harness) so when he went to see Gizmo he was snapped back.

I was so stunned I didn't know what to say, so I looked at both of the girls (I'm about 6'1 so I didn't want to be too mean) I said, "You girls need to be more careful, these dogs need to be leashed at all times, especially with major roads all around us."

I wanted to just take the little dog and run inside but I knew I couldn't, poor thing.

Now I know why breeders want couples with older chirldren or no children at all. But even besides that point, I've had terriers since I was in 2nd grade and knew darn well what I could and couldn't do with them.

Why don't people know how to take care of their animals???!!!! A little common sense goes a long way.

I just got on here thinking the same because I just hung up the phone after talking to a girl I went to college with. Seems her boyfriend has a yorkie that he leaves 12 hours a day by itself. He doesn't have time "so he says" to take the dog out in the morning, so has him go on pee pads all the time. The more my young friend told me, the more concerned I got about the dog. I tried to give good advice...but it fell on deaf ears...excuses about why they couldn't do whatever.

That would make me really upset as well. I know kids and Yorkies can get along well IF they are both well trained. In this case, I'd try and find out where they lived (check the yorkie's tag next time you see them), and talk to their parents in a freindly way. I know advise like this is easier to write than to carry out, and their parents may not be very concerned with the welfare of their dog, but the behavior you describe is so awfull I like to think that is what I'd do.

Oh that is sad. Their parents should supervise them and teach them how to handle little ones before just giving them the responsibility. :(

That poor puppy. I've had yorkies from the day my daughter was born and she was never allowed to walk them on her own. The parents need to be more responsible.

The poor little guy was so cute too. I called my Mom (if all else fails,call Momma) and hysterical and said "What should I do?" and she said just to watch out for him and if I see it again, contact the humane society.

And that's the thing too, I didn't mean to say that no little kids should be around Yorkies, but terriers (as we all know) are not typically (there are exceptions) that will norally simply follow you off a leash, especially if there's another dog.

And to watch the poor thing literally get strangled when his neck snapped back too...Gah, I'm still fuming!!!

It really blows my mind when I see young kids walking a dog with no adult. What is wrong with these parents?!?!? Even if the parents don't necessarily care too much about the dog (which really irritates me in the first place) don't they consider the possibility of something like what you said happen - dog gets loose, runs across street, kids follow. Umm hello! Aren't you concerned at least about your kids getting hit by a car?? Some people are just flat out stupid, I mean really:mad:

I really don't understand why parents don't teach their children how to act around animals. Harley is now petrified of little girls because a mother let her two girls chase Harley (he was loose in the store where I get him groomed and before I could catch him the girls came in and chased him). Like you wouldn't let your child do any of that with another child, why is an animal any different.

How sad that the parents don't even know enough to teach their children how to behave with an animal....especially one as small as a yorkie. But, the parents don't know enough about yorkies to know that they need a harness, not a collar to be leashed to. You really should have to take a test about your pet before they allow you to take them home :(

Not to sound to cynical, but I seriously think people need to take an exam before being able to have a pet. Granted I think the same thing about having children too.

Sorry if that sounds mean, but ignorance is not an excuse for stupidity.

I know how you all feel, i have a 13 year old daughter and from the time she could move, I taught her how to be gentle and loving to all animals and she has her own little 4 lb chihuahua and i have 4 yorkies and granted they are all bigger she is very gentle with them .......she even helped clean up newborn pups a couple months ago and did really awesome.... this is how i look at it , if you cant teach your child/children how to handle animals properly then you shouldnt have any pets in the home..... that is horrible how that pup was treated!!!!!!
