Newbie saying Hi ..and help !! Hi every one i joined yt some time ago, i have 2 yorkies brother and sister, they are 2 in september, all of a sudden they have started barking none stop in the garden, at bird's..flys ..washing on the line !!!and allsorts of silly things !! they are my babies and i love them to bits, they have been up to now very well behaved, so any ideas of how to stop this problem will be gladly recived as they are driving my neighbour round the twist.:animal-pa |
Hello:) Hmm, this just started and you haven't recently moved or anything? Barking is not easy to fix, but all I do is immediatly correct it when it happens. I go to the dog and tell them "NO", clap my hands once loudly or gently put my hand around their muzzle (unless there's actually a good reason for it like someone knocking on the door). Some people put coins in a tin can and shake it. It's usually something you have to "snap them out of" then you can distract them elsewhere. |
Hi, its just baffling me why all of a sudden they started to do this !! they have grown up here since being 11wks old in the same garden, they have been so good up until this last few weeks ..they have two walks a day and run round my huge garden whenever they want !! they spend 45 mins this morning barking at a wild dove that was on my roof !! this bird refused to be frightened of by them so until it flew away the noise from them both was terrible !! its as if nothing can come in the garden or move or make a noise , they are even going mad at the washing on the line !! my poor friend next door is fed up with the noise, i have a lhasa as well she doesnt join in, so huge problem at the min. |
Maybe something scared them when they were out there one day and that's what got them started. Can you maybe take them out there on a leash and when they start barking at something give it a bit of a tug and tell them "NO!"? I wish I could be of more help, I can only take Alice outside on a leash because the house we're in now doesn't have a fence around the yard and she barks at everything too, so that's what I do. It usually stops it for that time being, doesn't stop her from barking next time though or at something else. My other two bigger dogs get put out hooked to a tie out tethered to our deck, and if one of them starts barking while out there, that's it, in they come. You bark, you don't get to be outside other than potty. Again though, doesn't stop them from doing it next time though. If it's really a major problem with the neighbors, there are collars you can get that just vibrate (NOT the shock ones) when the dog barks, helps for some not for others, but might be worth a try if you really have to get it to stop. |
Most likely they are bored out there and the barking has become self rewarding for them. You need to give them something that is more rewarding then barking. Some dogs do great when put out in a yard to play- others cannot entertain themselves. Have you tried going out there and playing with them to keep them occupied? And then keeping them in the house when you can't be outside with them? Also, now is a good time to teach the quiet command- this way at least if you are around you can tell them quiet and they will stop. They shouldn't be allowed to bark for 45 minutes straight- besides being a nuisance to the neighbors it is reinforcing the behavior. The moment they start barking they need to be re-directed, if it is impossible, then they need to be brought inside. |
Hi, i have put some pennies in a few empty pop bottles as you suggested !! i have 1 on the kitchen window sill and the others on nearby window sills im going to have a go with that first !! they are asleep on the couch at the moment , i think i'll do the bottle and bring them in and shut the door .. see how it goes for a while ..really hope this works , thanks for helping me, i shall let you know how it goes :) |

Hi, im at home most of the day, i do spend a lot of time playing with them as they both love to chase a ball, they are not shut out and left in my garden the door is always open they go in and out as they choose, i also have a lhasa apso and a border collie so most of my time is spent with them, they are all walked twice a day and recived everything they need , 45 mins is to long to be barking i agree..i was reciving an important phone call .. my other two dogs dont behave like this. |
