Male Yorkie Pees when I touch him.... Frustrated!
 

Hey guys im new here and have read thru this forum for years, and appreciate all the help on any question that has got me to this point as a Yorkie owner!

So here is my dilemma, I have a 2 yr old female Yorkie named Princess... henceforth why I named my username after her lol.

So anyhow I had a pretty good training with Princess she had her issues but overall in the years we have had her, she's been great and is able to go to her pee pad no matter where she is and take care of business!

Now I have a male Yorkie named Bronx he's about 11 months old and we have had him for 8 months to date.... he's always been a fairly good dog loves to be babied and rolls over so u can rub his tummy.... but now for the past few months after the strenuous training to get him to pee on the pee pad he is starting to pee on my white walls.... assuming its because of the white pee pad lol.

Also during training I made sure to scold him if he made mistakes and correct it, and put him on time out..... so in that time its turned for the worst, seems he has fear of me and anytime I call him or try and grab him he will roll over and just pee away.... no matter if he just went potty hell pee away! Sure I understand out of excitement when i get home he pees, which I have no control over and have to turn thee other way.... but this is becoming an issue with me and my family and don't know what else to do.

So I turn to u guys.... please give me some opinions on my dilemma and what I can do... assuming he needs my trust I think.

My first question would be if Bronx is neutered? If not he could be marking. Secondly, you never scold a pup for having a potty accident, you clean it up and move on. More effective training would involve positive reinforcement such as rewards and treats when he does go potty on the pad.

I've heard of people keeping the dog on a leash at their side at all times while home to avoid going off and pottying where the aren't supposed to. When not home, the dog goes in the crate. This is only until he gets trained of course.

It sounds like your male is doing submissive peeing. Perhaps you have been yelling at him to much. Has he been neutered? My suggestion at this point is to get some belly bands for him and start over with his training. First of all when he goes belly up you should ignore him. Don't give him attention when he is in the submissive position. Does he have free run of the house? He sounds like a sweet pup. He needs praise, reassurance and lots of guidance.

Sounds like marking. Once the behavior is established, it is tough to break. You may want to investigate belly bands.

Ditch the scolding. The damage (submissive peeing) is going to be hard to undo, but not impossible. Definitely use positive reinforcement methods. Far more effective in yielding positive results. My boys thrive on the attention they receive for going potty on the pad and wouldn't miss the cheering and party that follows.

Be sure to give you male ample opportunity to potty in the correct place. Make sure the pad is readily accessible or that trips outdoors are frequent.

I wonder if you have reviewed the threads in the general training forum. But as you self described that your young male is now fearful of you, you will need to rebuild the trust of your dog.

One cardinal rule of discipline no matter the nature of the discipline is to never call your dog to you to be disciplined. Instead you walk over to the dog to discipline.

Also some dogs are what are known as "soft" and some "hard". And this has nothing to do with breed or sex. A soft dog needs a different kind of discipline than the "hard" dog. As the name implies soft means that discipline needs to be finely tuned to just the right "level" for a soft and or insecure dog. Never heavy handed or too loud of a voice.

Never reprimand a Yorkie for potty accidents. They won't understand, and may avoid pottying in front of you. They think 'Oh no! Pottying is bad!' instead of 'Pottying here is bad'. May be why he started on the walls...

I agree, sounds like submissive peeing... belly bands (with a feminin hygiene pad attached to it) may help contain him till he gets back to a routine. He wants to please you but he's confused right now as to what you want from him.

Start over from the beginning. Praise and treat when he goes on the pad.

You've gotten some great advice here, I'm sorry you didn't good advice from the beginning. Punishing for housebreaking accidents might work temporarily, but there's always a side effect to punishment. I do think that two things may be going on here, submissive peeing with marking also. An unneutered dog will mark, it’s genetic. I agree with the others, you need to build his confidence up and his trust level of you. The dog isn't peeing on the walls because it's the same color, dogs aren't very moved by colors, but by smells. Male dogs typically mark and some pee on vertical surfaces, and some breeders say to place a large gallon bottle in the middle of the pee pad to encourage them to pee there. Joey was neutered and only marks outside.

Also, if I might add, never use the dog's name in discipline!!! Dog's name should always be used in positive reinforcement!!

Thanks for the great advice guys.... Ya it became such huge burden.... some errors that i made is scolding using his name, I can remember the first few weeks with him around ... very excited to go potty and the treats really helped.
Unfortunately, he has full run of the house and don't see a point to enclose him anywhere while we are doing our own thing in the house or away.

A lot of errors I think were made by the fact that as he went on the pee pad he was always one to roll over after a Good Boy! and rub his belly, but as he went in my rooms or on my carpet he was disciplined and shortly thereafter decided to roll over and pee or walk really low in a crawling form and pee his life away.

At the end it became too much on my pregnant wife and myself as he began to pee all over the place, walls, doorways a foot away from the pee pad, everything was very accessible to him but I think the discipline became too much for him.

So we decided to take a chance and give him to a good friend of mine and his family and see some changes in him, so maybe a change of pace might be the best thing for him and a new environment,

I still have my female, which i might add is a great Yorkie, and needs no babysitting, goes by herself to the pee pad, has full access to the home and NO accidents (knock on wood) lol
One of our main purposes was to get her a play mate, but for some reason the day he went away we thought shed go into a depression....... turns out were wrong, she's happier then ever!!

Sorry you had to rehome him, this is a major cause of rehoming and I always hope people will learn the rules of housebreaking from the beginning. It’s not clear from what you wrote, but you do understand there’s a difference between marking and peeing? Was you male neutered? Since you also have a female, it’s very likely your male was marking. If he's not neutered tell the new family to get him neutered.

It was tough, it took months of thinking and re-training, I can actually say that I didn't give him the full 100% of the time to train like I did my female, but my female had some issues but got it quick.

No he was not neutered but other then marking his territory it was also peeing everywhere and also #2 lol.
At the end of the day it worked out for the best and my friend couldn't be happier.

Glad it worked out, but I really think he was marking more than peeing if he wasn't nuetered, and it's almost impossible to stop the marking of an unneutered male.

Ya I am not up for neutering a dog, we wanted our Princess to have a playmate and to have a set of puppies but as it was she never got along with him in the time we had him.
