Food Question In the morning, Wally gets breakfast before I leave for work. When I leave, he is put in his ex pen for the day with food and water until I return home from work. Here's the issue - the other day, I had forgotten to grab something I needed and had to run back home. I came home about 20 minutes after originally leaving for the day and noticed that he had already scarfed down all his food! He is a little bit of a porker (just like his mom - ha! :p) but now it's apparent that he is not having any food during the middle of the day since he eats it all within a half hour of me leaving for work. Do any of you have any creative ways of getting him to save his food for later in the day? I've seen feeders with timers on them, but I don't have $200 to shell out on something like that right now. Thanks! |
There are puzzle balls, where he will have to figure out how to roll the ball to make the food fall out. Incessant rolling of the ball for about 20 mins or more will prob get him to get all the food out, but at least it will be slower than just a bowl of food out. Hey at least you have a yorkie that wants to eat! |
How long are you gone during the day? I'm thinking that if your pup is fed in the morning, he can wait until you get home for dinner. A lot of us feed only twice a day. Especially if he's overweight. If you're worried about boredom, leave toys out. Or feed less in the morning and put the rest in a puzzle ball. Whatever you do, I'd base it on his weight. If he's heavy, feed less. Good luck! |
How old is Wally? Unless you are afraid of hypoglycemia he should be fine with two meals a day. I feed my two when we first get up in the am (they go to the kitchen and won't leave until I feed them:D) and this is at about 5:45am. They get a snack of green beans at 8am before I leave for work and then eat their evening meal when I get home around 5pm. I agree with the others, if you want to slow his eating down, use a puzzle toy. PS..they are 4 and 3 years old and little pigs...they don't turn their nose up at anything:D |
I feed twice a day. Foxy gets a meal in the morning before I leave for work, then she eats later before bed. And I cannot keep weight on her at all! |
I only feed twice a day measured amounts to everyone here - including 7 month old Alice and two cats. They eat their whole meal then they are good till the next one. It's at about 8 am and 5 pm. Are you wanting him to eat more frequently because of his age? The puzzle ball is a great idea if that's the case, plus it will keep him occupied and entertained for a while when you're at work. Just make sure whatever amount you put in there gets subtracted from his breakfast. You definatly don't want any extra in there if he's chubby, you should probably cut back a bit actually. |
How old is he? If he is an adult, and not teeny-tiny, he should be fine eating breakfast in the morning and dinner in the evening. No need to graze all day. Levi is 3 years old and eats his breakfast around 6:30 AM and then has dinner around 5:30 or 6 PM. |
I also feed my girls only twice a day. 7 am and then again at 4. Believe me they don't let me forget what time it is either. If it's 1 minute past 4 they are barking and running to the cupboard for their food! :) :aimeeyork |

I feed my dogs twice per day- whenever I get up in the morning and then again around 4 or 5. As long as your pup has access to water he should be fine throughout the day. |
I feed twice a day as well. Once at around 4:10 in the morning when I get up with the BF (we actually get up at 3:50, but I get to go back to bed with the girls around 5am, so it's not TOO big a deal!) and then again around 4 in the afternoon. So they go about 12 hrs in between meals and are perfectly fine. But I have to agree with the others when they say that if your baby is overweight then you need to cut back. It is so incredibly dangerous for any dog to be overweight... But especially a Yorkie. Extra weight on a dog can cause joint problems, kidney problems, diabetes, breathing difficulties, heart issues, increased likelihood of a stroke, increased likelihood of certain types of cancer... The list goes on and on. And while you may not think a LITTLE extra weight is a big deal, what may seem to you to be a little extra weight is probably a lot when you consider how small a Yorkie really is. Think about it: if a yorkie SHOULD weight 5lbs, but weighs 6 instead, that is the equivalent of a 125lb person weighing 150. So that one pound on them is like 25 extra pounds on us. When you look at it like that, you start to realize that even a few extra ounces on a yorkie are a huge health risk. One of the most dangerous health issues facing dogs today is also the most easily preventable. If your puppy is overweight, PLEASE address this asap... Because if you don't, you'll almost certainly have to deal with the consequences sooner rather than later. *steps down from soapbox* Good luck with your baby! :) |
