Dog parks? Do any of you visit dog parks with your Yorkie regularly? I am fortunate enough to have quite a few wonderful dog parks within 15 miles of my house. I have looked them up online and read about some of the rules and regulations that they have. Each park has a separate area for small dogs, which is where I would make sure to keep Wally. I am thinking it might be wise to go at a slower time for our first few trips out there. I plan on bringing some water and also some baggies for any poop breaks he might need. Other than that, are there any other items you would suggest I bring or not bring? Any helpful hints? Wally is 13 weeks old this week. I plan on waiting until after next week once he has finished his boosters and gotten his rabies shot. Is this an okay time to start trying out the dog parks or should we wait until he’s a little older? Thanks, everyone! I always appreciate your help and input! |
I take Troy to dog parks and doggy daycare. I attribut this to him being a pretty social little guy. |
Madison starting attending puppy kindergarten and puppy play at around 12 weeks. My vet told me not to have her play with big dogs since she wasn't due for her rabies until later this month (She's 16 weeks now). But she's done really good with playing with the pups in class and at puppy play. I would wait until he's had his rabies for the parks. Madison is also patiently waiting! :) |
I've taken Jackson since he was about 5 months old (only because I did not discover it until then). We LOVE our dog park... we have two that we frequent. I definitely think the dog park has helped him be such a social little guy. He loves going there, some days he likes to just chill, others he enjoys running like a crazy man, others he is more mellow, it just depends on the day, the weather and the dogs there. I would preferably wait until he gets his rabies shot, just to be on the safe side. I allowed Jackson to go outside as early as 9 weeks but dog parks and pet stores sometimes carry diseases I'd be more cautious of than just our backyard, etc. Dog parks around here are wonderful, most owners are great, pick up after their dogs, if their dog is being aggressive they will immediately take them out. Sure there's been a few scuffles here and there but I love going and don't know what I'd do without it! Here is one day at our dog park.... |
I used to when I drove my car. Now, I don't drive and walking takes and hr to an hr and a half so we don't go as much. We do take them to meetups though. I think dog park is great to teach them to socialize...mine are too socialized...haha P.S. don't start until 4 months old after all series of shots have completed. |
I've been to a dog park with a larger dog before. Not the best experience. The place is a breeding ground for mosquitos and lepto. If I ever did decide to take a dog to one, I'd make very sure that: Heartworm preventative stayed UTD No visits until two weeks after last puppy shots including rabies Lepto vaccine in areas where it is an issue if the vet feels it is safe Flea (and probably tick) preventative Fecals done often I'd prefer going to a park where dogs don't frequent or using a dog daycare for socialization (because there is a much closer watch on if dogs are UTD on everything). If I did go to a dog park, I'd be making very sure that my pup was protected from disease and vet checked for parasites often. |
