Chewing Hi all I am a new yorkie owner. Hunter, my baby boy, is 11 weeks old and is chewing on everything! As of a week ago he weighed 2lbs 3oz but he already looks a bit bigger :) He is supposed to be around 5-5.5lbs full grown. I have bully sticks for him and lots of toys but no specific chew toys. I was wondering what kind of chew toys you recommend for puppies? Are there anythings to avoid or good things to look for?? Thanks for all of your advice. |
I really don't have a lot of chew toys for mine. They are not huge chewers although they LOVE bully sticks. That's usually all I give for chewing. They have lots of toys. Even a kong but they never really play with that. They like chasing balls and playing tug especially with squeaky toys. But I have heard antlers and himalayan chews are both good. |
chewing... Jovi chews everything.... she has tons of chew toys, bully sticks and kong but she still chews the cushions on my living room chair. I just keep telling her no and putting her off the chair - hopefully she'll get it one day!:p |
I just now had to correct Alice for chewing on the wooden leg of my computer chair lol. At 11 weeks old they're teething, so they chew to ease that. Alice (who is done teething but still chewing all kinds of things:rolleyes:) seems to like to chew on things that are hard, so try KONGs or other toys that are hard like that. She also has 'stuffing free' plush toys that she loves to play with, but for actual chewing she prefers something hard (like my woodwork :rolleyes:). I just got a dog toy that looks just like a "key set" teething ring that you'd use for a baby and she likes that. At 7 months old I do correct her firmly with a "NO!" when she chews on something that's not one of her toys, but she's 7 months old, at 11 weeks you don't want to be as firm - just move them away from anything inapropriate and give the toy as a replacement. Basic rules for safety are obviously it can't be too small and you don't want anything that looks like it has a smaller peice that can be chewed off and swallowed (like the nose of a plush toy for example). For the harder ones, again, just make sure it's durable and pieces can't be chewed off. I like Nylabones (I get the "flavored" ones to make them more appealing) too, teenie tiny pieces start to wear off after a while, but they're so miniscule it's not a problem. |
For puppies I Love the petstages toys- they have so many different ones to help with their development. Petstages - Developmental Toys for Pets |
